Job Description
Consultant Ophthalmologist Vitreo-retinal & medical retina

We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed colleague to join our dynamic team, to help deliver a first class ophthalmic service for Bournemouth and Dorset.

We are a friendly hospital with an interactive and innovative approach from our management team. Patient care is at the centre of all we do and we would welcome a candidate who is prepared to follow the principle of "would I be happy for a member of my own family to receive this care/treatment?" and strive for excellence.

To join a team of 13 consultants, 2 associate specialists, 4 Trust grade doctors and 6 trainees. The out-patients department and adjacent emergency area are well equipped with multiple clinic rooms, a separate one-stop cataract assessment area and a minor ops theatre. There is a 5 room macula suite with 3 multi-function injection rooms. We house a comprehensive range of diagnostic equipment, the majority of which is networked via Zeiss Forum software. Included are five Humphrey perimeters plus one Octopus, 3 OCTs (Zeiss), digital fundus and anterior segment photography, ultra-sound, Pentacam and IOLMaster biometry. Within the outpatient department are Yag, argon and SLT lasers. The orthoptic department is staffed by three full time and one part time orthoptists and there are special clinics including medical retina, vitreoretinal, glaucoma, oculoplastic, Paediatric, corneal and neuro-ophthalmology. Imaging facilities consist of CT and MR at both Bournemouth and Poole.

Person Specification Experience
  • Evidence of the ability to manage and lead a team
  • Evidence to demonstrate delivery of high quality care
  • The ability to supervise junior staff and carry out 'on the job' training
  • Audits completed
  • Other management experience including outpatient priorities and waiting lists
  • Evidence of postgraduate teaching (courses run, lectures given etc)
Qualifications
  • Full GMC registration
  • Are on the GMC Specialist Register for Ophthalmology and have their CCT/CCST or will receive it within six months of the date of interview
  • FRCOphth or equivalent
  • Evidence of complete, structured and adequate general ophthalmic training
  • The ability to provide an up to date, expert clinical opinion in all aspects of Ophthalmology, and to take full responsibility for patients' clinical care
  • Evidence of recent vitreoretinal subspecialty training, preferably at an internationally recognised centre
  • Higher Degrees in Retinal Studies
  • Evidence of recent medical retina subspecialty training
  • Management courses successfully completed
