Site: Horton General, Banbury; Delivery suite/Caesarean Section session at John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. The post may require rotation through ANC sessions at the John Radcliffe. The department provides general obstetric services with a Level 3 neonatal unit. The successful candidate will have Fetomaternal Medicine expertise and will maintain this after appointment.

There is an expectation to work mainly at Horton Hospital with some time at John Radcliffe Hospital. On call is maternity-only.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder's duties will be split between Horton General, Banbury and John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. Clinical duties include delivering acute general intrapartum care and obstetric care supported by at least two obstetricians in training. The post holder will undertake obstetric on-call duties no more frequent than 1:9 (currently 1:16 with internal cover; approx. 1:12.8 in the worked year). The out-of-hours on-call attracts a supplement paid at Band A.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post-holder's duties are split between Horton General, Banbury and John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. Responsibilities include high-risk antenatal clinics at Horton Hospital and sessions providing acute general intrapartum care, supported by at least two obstetricians in training. On-call duties are as described above.

Person specification
  • Primary medical qualification - MBBS / MBChB or equivalent
  • MRCOG or appropriate specialist registration
  • Full GMC registration
  • Relevant CCT or equivalent (equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of AAC
  • Higher medical degree
Clinical experience and effectiveness
  • Broad-based experience in general obstetrics and antenatal care
  • Competence in managing high-risk pregnancy, especially diabetes
  • Experience in multidisciplinary care and joint diabetes antenatal clinics
  • Recent intrapartum care experience, including emergency obstetrics
  • Experience providing out-of-hours/on-call obstetric care
  • Familiarity with UK guidelines (NICE, RCOG) on diabetes in pregnancy
  • Maternal Medicine ATSM or SITM or equivalent
  • Subspecialty Training in Fetomaternal Medicine
Teaching, training and research
  • Experience supervising junior staff
  • Experience contributing to teaching and training for O&G trainees
  • Postgraduate qualification in medical education
  • Leadership in multidisciplinary team training
  • First-author peer-reviewed publications
Organisational and management experience
