Job Description

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for a Consultant in Obstetric Medicine based in the Women's Centre at John Radcliffe Hospital. The Maternal Medicine Service provides a mixed secondary and tertiary service to Oxfordshire and a tertiary service for the Thames Valley Maternal Medicine Network, serving a population of about 3 million with approximately 7,500 births per year in the Trust and about 40,000 births per year in the Thames Valley Network footprint. The post is less than full-time (4 PA, 0.4 WTE).

Main duties of the job

The post-holder's duties will be primarily in the Women's Centre at John Radcliffe Hospital, with possible clinics in other units in the region. Responsibilities include multidisciplinary antenatal and postnatal clinics, pre-conception clinics for women with medical problems, and management of maternal medicine inpatients.

The post-holder will have a desk in an office in Maternity, with access to a PC, intranet, Wi-Fi, and identified secretarial support.

Working for our organisation

We are one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the country, providing a wide range of clinical services and acting as a base for medical education, training and research. The Trust comprises four hospitals: John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, and the Horton General Hospital. Our values focus on Delivering Compassionate Excellence, with emphasis on compassion, respect, learning, delivery, improvement and excellence.

Many recruitment programmes use values-based interviewing to identify candidates who share our values and can deliver compassionate excellence from the outset.

Teaching/Research

The post-holder will be required to teach and examine clinical students. There is potential to contribute to department research activities and collaborate with clinicians and scientists in the Nuffield Department of Women's and Reproductive Health. Teaching and training contributions will be included in regular job plan reviews, with potential honorary and university affiliations. The department provides training for obstetric medicine and opportunities exist to develop academic interests.

Clinical Governance

The post-holder will participate in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement, and compliance with external accrediting bodies.

Professional Development and Revalidation

OUHFT supports continuing professional development (CPD) with time and financial support. The post-holder must stay up to date with their practice and demonstrate this to the Trust. Revalidation and annual appraisals are supported in line with Royal College of Physicians requirements.

Emergency cover and Management

There is a rota for maternal medicine coverage; the post-holder will contribute to on-call arrangements as appropriate and work within the Trust's management policies and procedures. Administrative duties related to patient care and service delivery will be performed under the direction of the lead clinician or directorate chair.
