Consultant Geriatrician and General Physician

Main duties of the job
  • Provide senior clinical leadership in assessing and managing older adults with complex needs.
  • Support timely, safe and person centred care across acute and community pathways.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to guide clinical decisions and care plans.
  • Contribute to teaching, supervision and development of junior and non medical staff.
  • Lead or support quality improvement and service development initiatives.
  • Model compassionate, professional practice that promotes dignity and respect.
  • Use strong communication and clinical judgement to enhance safety and patient experience.

Our teams provide services out of five hospitals across South East London and Kent, namely King's College Hospital, the Princess Royal University Hospital, Orpington Hospital, Queen Mary's Hospital Sidcup, and Beckenham Beacon. Job responsibilities
  • Provide senior clinical leadership in assessing and managing older adults with complex, multi factorial needs.
  • Deliver and promote timely, safe and person centred care across acute, ambulatory and community pathways.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to guide clinical decisions, prioritisation and care planning.
  • Contribute to teaching, supervision and development of junior doctors and wider team members.
  • Lead or support quality improvement, audit and service development initiatives.
  • Model compassionate, inclusive and professional practice that upholds dignity and respect.
  • Apply strong communication, teamwork and clinical judgement to enhance safety and patient experience.
  • Support effective coordination of care and continuity across services to improve outcomes for older people.

You must be fully registered with the GMC and hold a Licence to Practice and be on the Specialist Register, or within six months of attaining your CCT or equivalent to be eligible for interview.

The postholder will have regular contact with vulnerable adults and/or children (0 18 years), therefore this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975, and as such, it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Full MRCP
  • Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD)
Registration
  • Full Registration with GMC
  • Name on GMC Specialist Register on date of taking up appointment
Training and Experience
  • Wide experience in all aspects of geriatric & general internal medicine, culminating in award of Certificate of Completion of Training by GMC, or award of Certificate of Eligibility for Specialty Registration (CESR) by GMC.
Administration
  • Experience in day to day organisation of geriatric and/or general medical services in a busy Teaching Hospital
  • Familiarity with information technology and general computer skills
  • Familiar with current structure of UK National Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes
Management and Leadership
  • Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi disciplinary teams
  • Management course and/or qualification
Audit and Quality Improvement
  • Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit
  • Must have undertaken and completed audit projects
  • Audit Publications
Research and Publications
  • Experience of clinical research
  • Publication of relevant review articles or case reports
  • Relevant research experience in one or more aspects of geriatric and/or general medicine
Teaching
  • Experience of undergraduate and post graduate teaching and exam preparation
  • Teaching skills course/qualification
