Job Description

We are looking to appoint 2 Consultant Gastroenterologists to join our team, based at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, Somerset.

All areas of sub-specialisation will be considered, we are keen to appoint candidates who will compliment the existing skills of the team.

We have permission to appoint trainees who are in a UK higher speciality training post within 12 months of their predicted CCT date at the time of interview in December 2025.

Our service offers the full range of endoscopic procedures and sub-specialities and we are due to move in to our brand new, purpose built, state of the art endoscopy unit at Musgrove Park early in 2026. We are active in research in both luminal gastroenterology and hepatology and the hospital hosts medical students from both Plymouth and Bristol Medical Schools.

Shortlisted candidates will be expected to visit the hospital in person prior to the interview date to meet the key individuals in the service including the current Consultant Gastroenterologists.

Main duties of the job

You'll play a pivotal role in managing complex gastroenterological conditions, participating in the emergency on-call rota, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure seamless patient care.

Participate in emergency and out-of-hours care through the on-call rota

Lead and support clinical governance initiatives including audits, reviews, and quality improvement

Engage with medical students from Bristol and Plymouth universities, with opportunities for formal faculty roles

Collaborate on cutting-edge research in IBD and hepatology

Critically appraise and apply the latest scientific evidence to clinical practice

Embrace flexible working with VPN access and provided laptop

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Essential Qualifications & Attainments
  • MRCP (UK) or an equivalent postgraduate medical qualification
  • CCT in Gastroenterology (with or without General Internal Medicine), or expected to obtain it within 12 months of interview
Experience
  • Sub-specialty interests in gastroenterology that complement the needs of the service
  • Competence to work independently without direct supervision
  • JAG (or equivalent) accreditation in upper and lower GI endoscopy
  • Understanding of clinical risk management and evidence-informed practice
  • Ability to mentor both medical and nursing staff
  • Appropriate level of clinical knowledge with awareness of limitations
  • Ability to prioritise clinical needs and organise workload efficiently
  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and governance activities
  • Comprehensive IT skills and understanding of NHS systems and constraints
Additional Criteria
  • Willingness to practice evidence-based medicine
  • Ability to contribute to teaching and training of medical students and junior doctors
  • Capacity to audit and evaluate quality and effectiveness of care
