This post is a substantive consultant post in paediatric anaesthesia based at The Royal London Hospital. The vacancy has arisen due to a retirement. The post holder will be an employee of Bart's Health and there may be future opportunities or requirements to work at any of the other hospitals in the Barts Health group.

This is a general post for a consultant anaesthetist in Paediatric anaesthesia, with an interest in acute pain management and regional anaesthesia. The appointee must be able to work flexibly and be able to cover the range of specialties provided for in the Paediatric Anaesthesia service at The Royal London Hospital.

Main duties of the job

Job responsibilities

We provide anaesthetic services across all our hospitals: The Royal London Hospital, Whipps Cross Hospital, Newham Hospital and St Bartholomews Hospital (Barts). Future reconfiguration of services may lead to movement of anaesthetic staff across hospitals.

At St Bartholomews Hospital: Cardiothoracic surgery, cardiology and respiratory medicine, breast and endocrine, oncology, radiotherapy and cardiothoracic. With the exception of ophthalmic and breast surgery, all other surgical services moved to the Royal London Hospital in 2012.

At the Royal London Hospital: POA, Pain acute and chronic, Trauma and orthopaedics, gynae-oncology, gynaecology, urology, HPB, colorectal, ENT, general and plastic surgery, neurosurgery, vascular, renal, maxillofacial, dental, paediatrics, obstetrics and interventional radiology.

Paediatric Anaesthesia

The paediatric anaesthetic department consists of 16 consultants, as well as designated paediatric anaestheticresidents. We have specific links to the Paediatric Critical Care (PCCU), the Childrens Acute Transport Service (CATS), and the Trauma Service. We cover all surgical specialities (excluding cardiac and burns surgery), and manage children presenting with multiple complex co-morbidities,and neonates.

Weco-ordinate an acute paediatricpain service (along with twospecialist pain nurses) and support the level 3 medical and surgical neonatal unit, Paediatric A&E (the biggest in London), and PCCU. Paediatric surgery has its own dedicated theatre floor with 4 operating theatres and associated wards. We also support children having general anaesthesia for interventional radiology,endoscopy, MRIand in a stand-alone dental institute.

We provide structured training to residents from the School of Anaesthesia during their paediatric block; afford opportunities for research and audit. We host an international Paediatric Anaesthesia Education Day every November

Person Specification Qualifications/ Clinical Skills

• SIA (or equivalent Higher training) in paediatric anaesthesia
• Full GMC Registration with a 'Licence to Practice'
• MBBS or MBChB or equivalent
• CCT in anaesthesia (or Equivalent) or, if in training within 6 months of CCT
• FRCA (or equivalent)
• APLS/EPLS provider
• ALS provider
• Experience of UK healthcare system
• Post-CCT experience in paediatric anaesthesia
• Fellowship or equivalent Advanced training in paediatric anaesthesia
• Level 3 Child Protection training

Special Knowledge/ Abilities and/or Experience

• Experience in paediatric regional anaesthesia
• Extensive experience in a wide variety of paediatric and adult anaesthesia
• Experience in the management of paediatric major trauma
• Experience in the peri-operative care of paediatric patients with a focus on acute pain management
• Experience in anaesthesia for adults with learning disabilities
• Experience in independent delivery of anaesthesia for complex neonatal and paediatric patients
• Experience in paediatric perioperative medicine, including pre-operative assessment and enhanced recovery pathways
