Clinical Research Fellow in Sickle Cell

This is an exciting opportunity for a haematology SpR interested in sickle cell to take part in clinical research. We are a large clinical sickle centre and the successful candidate will gain significant clinical experience in sickle cell. But the primary focus of the Clinical Research Fellowship will be on clinical research as part of the sickle natural history study

The successful candidate will be co-supervised by Prof Abdel Douiri in KCL's medical statistics department and will gain skills in epidemiology and data analysis. The expected outcome of the one year fellowship is for the candidate to be successful in securing external funding for a 3 year higher degree to have a research project in sickle epidemiology.

Main duties of the job

This post holder will be part of the sickle cell clinical and research teams, as well as the KCL medical statistics teams, all based on the Guys Hospital site. They will have a specific responsibility to take part in research related to sickle cell, especially in relation to the "sickle natural history study". They will also be involved in the routine care of patients with sickle cell as outpatients.

The Haematology, Cellular Pathology & Supporting Services Directorate is an integral part of the Cancer and Surgery Clinical Group. The Cancer and Surgery Clinical Group will bring together a number of Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust's services that work collaboratively across the hospital and with our partners to provide excellence in clinical care, research and academia. It will operate as a distinct entity with devolved accountability within the Trust. The aim of this Clinical Group is to deliver the GSTT Cancer and Surgery Strategy.

Job responsibilities
  • Professional / Clinical responsibilities
  • To develop a clinical research project to fulfil requirements of higher research degree
  • Apply for external funding for research project
  • Work with study manager / research nurses as required on the sickle natural history study (including data quality control, data analysis, report writing for the sponsor) all after appropriate training and under supervision
  • Review of patients in outpatient setting with senior support.
  • Ensure timely production of letters within current Trust targets.
  • Arrange appropriate investigations, treatments, documentation and referrals.
  • Discuss cases with the appropriate consultant/team or specialised/disease-specific management team.
  • Attend and contribute to departmental meetings / seminars and MDM sessions as required.
  • Ensure leave requests are submitted with sufficient notice and clinical cover to maintain safe patient care.

  • oMRCP (2) or equivalent

Experience
  • oMinimum 3 years general medical experience
  • oCompleted IMT (or equivalent) training
  • oMinimum 1-year experience in haematology
  • oEvidence of teaching delivered
  • oSenior specialist trainee in haematology post FRCPath 2
  • oTeaching qualification
Knowledge
  • oEvidence of interest in Haemoglobinopathy
  • oUnderstanding of Networks
  • oExperience in haemoglobinopathy care
