Job Description
Clinical Research Fellow in Early Phase Cancer Trials

To participate in oncology patient management in early phase clinical trials and to become familiar with early phase trial protocols and working practice within VCC, promoting unifying working practice in early phase trials between VCC trials unit and CRF at UHW and performing duties at both sites.

Main duties of the job

Conduct research within early phase oncology trials, contributing to the overall research performance of Velindre and Cardiff University, with the aim of improving the delivery of early phase oncology clinical trials and publishing work in high quality journals. The post is also designed to generate research proposals that can be submitted to secure funding for a higher research degree.

Person Specification Qualifications and Knowledge
  • Qualified Medical Practitioner
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration and License to Practice
  • SCE - Specialty Certificate Examination in Medical Oncology or equivalent
  • MSc, BSc, PhD
  • Knowledge of grant applications
  • Knowledge of the process through R&D for clinical trials
  • Proven publication record including a first author publication
  • Desirable: Ability to speak Welsh (level 1) or willingness to develop skill
Experience
  • Clinical experience at the ST5 level or higher in medical oncology
  • Recruiting and managing patients in clinical trials, including Phase I oncology trials
  • Completion of NIHR Associate PI scheme
  • Experience delivering presentations at regional, national and international levels
  • IT skills, particularly MS Office applications
  • Analytical skills - able to analyse and present complex data in a range of formats to diverse audiences
  • Experience working with or managing patients requiring high dependency or intensive care
  • Proven ability to manage own time and deliver tasks to deadlines
  • Postgraduate certificate in Teaching and Learning for Health Professionals (desirable)
Skills and Attributes
  • Proven ability to use IT to deliver presentations and write reports
  • Proven ability to critically appraise literature
  • Proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and teamwork within work environments
Other
  • Welsh speaker (level 1) or willingness to develop proficiency
  • Proven ability to work without close supervision
  • Proven ability to adapt to changing clinical trial requirements
  • Organisation and time management skills to deliver a range of tasks and projects against tight deadlines
  • Flexible approach to working, including problem solving skills, management of change and a desire to develop knowledge
