In recognition of the complexity and specialist multidisciplinary input required to diagnose and care for patients exposed in utero to certain medications, NHS England has commissioned a new pilot multidisciplinary service between Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and Newcastle University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The foetal exposure to medicines service will establish multidisciplinary assessment and interventional procedures for children and adults at risk of a foetal exposure syndrome.

Main duties of the job This post will ensure the development, systematic provision, and evaluation of a high-quality specialist neuropsychology service to patients within the newly established service at Newcastle University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The successful applicant will be responsible for neuropsychological assessments and formulations and for integrating this information into the wider multidisciplinary team care management for these patients. There will be close liaison within the network (Royal Manchester Children's Hospital) and with the patient's local services. The post will include multidisciplinary work with senior colleagues in clinical genetics, speech and language therapy, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy.

Job responsibilities

• Neuropsychological assessment and intervention with children, adults, and their families
• Analysis and formulation of neuropsychological assessments, report writing and feedback to children, adults, families and other professionals and agencies
• Neuropsychological contribution to MDT diagnostic clinics and clinical discussions
• Consultation and provision of neuropsychological advice for both diagnostic/formulation purposes and intervention
• Staff training
• Supervising and supporting the neuropsychological assessment provided by assistant psychologists and other clinical members of the specialist paediatric team who provide evidence-based care and treatment as appropriate
• Utilising research skills and contributing to audit, policy and service development and research under the supervision of the service clinical lead
• Liaison and effective teamwork within the multidisciplinary FEM service and with colleagues from our partner service and with staff from tertiary clinical genetics, paediatric, community health and education services

Band 7

• To provide a qualified specialist clinical psychology service to the neuropsychology service, including inpatients and outpatients; providing specialist neuropsychological and psychological assessment, formulation and therapy.
• Offering advice and consultation on clients psychological care to colleagues from other disciplines and to other, non-professional carers, working autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the teams policies and procedures.
• To utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research within the area served by the team/service.

Band 8a

• To take responsibility for clinical neuropsychology provision for patients referred to the FEM service for neuropsychological assessment, formulation and diagnostic opinion.
• To provide supervision of assistant and/or trainee clinical psychologists.
• Provide a qualified specialist clinical neuropsychology service within the FEM service based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle providing specialist neuropsychological assessment, formulation and intervention plans.
• Offering advice and consultation on clients psychological care to colleagues from other disciplines and to other, non-professional carers, working autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the teams policies and procedures.
• To utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research within the FEM service.

Person Specification

• Doctoral level training in Clinical Psychology, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the British Psychological Society
• Registered with HCPC
• Doctorate level knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex, multivariate data analysis as practiced within the clinical fields of psychology
• Experience of specialist psychological assessment, formulation and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in patient settings
• Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course with presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity
• In addition to obtaining the necessary qualifications and experience to practice as a clinical psychologist, has additional knowledge of National Good Practice of working as a clinical psychologist in Health services
• Computer literate - competent use of email/internet and patient information systems for electronic clinical records and diary management
• Ability to teach and train others, using a variety of complex multi-media materials suitable for presentations within public, professional and academic settings
• Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate, to support and maintain clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and challenging behaviour
• Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration
• Well-developed skills in the ability to empathise and communicate effectively, orally and in writing complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS
• Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups
• Demonstrable skills in maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive material and challenging behaviour
• The ability to meet the travel requirements of post - some community-based work
• Training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or fields of applied psychology
• Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision
• Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts
• Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in specific difficult to treat groups (e.g. personality disorder, dual diagnosis, people with additional disabilities, etc.)
• Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health
• Experience of working within a multicultural framework

Meets All Band 8a Criteria

• Doctoral level training in Clinical Psychology, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the British Psychological Society
• Registered with HCPC
• Substantial experience in providing a neuropsychology service, and clinical psychology services to patients presenting to neurological services and willingness to develop skills working with neurodevelopmental disorders
• Experience of specialist psychological assessment, formulation and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in patient settings
• Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course with presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity and with experience of working as a qualified psychologist in a health care setting
• Doctorate level knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex, multivariate data analysis as practiced within the clinical fields of psychology
• In addition to obtaining the necessary qualifications and experience to practice as a clinical psychologist, has additional knowledge of working as a clinical psychologist in Health services and particularly neuropsychological services
