Clinical Engineering Assistant/Apprentice

An assistant/apprentice role in support of various Clinical Engineering functions, performing commissioning, decommissioning, decontamination, booking in, returning and collecting equipment, Equipment Library duties, assisting Stores personnel and Technical Inspectors.
To work under close supervision of the Team Leader, experienced Technical Inspectors and subject matter experts in the department, developing and evidencing relevant competencies and knowledge.
To engage with actively participate to completion in the Clinical Engineering training scheme, usually Healthcare Engineering Specialist Technician, Level 3 under the Government's apprenticeship scheme and to build a portfolio of developing knowledge, experience and competencies towards fulfilling the departments work commitment and supporting evidence-based progression to Technical Inspector.
Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS at Risk staff throughout Devon who is able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.
Main duties of the jobReceives patients and other visitors to Clinical Engineering with due regard for their safety in potentially dangerous environment.
Maintains under supervision, service schedules, records scientific and technical documentation in accordance with Quality System and Trusts Medical Devices Database.
Rotates through all Clinical Engineering Teams to improve breadth of experience and to assist in building own competencies.
Understands, works and complies with the Quality System, bringing to the attention of the Team Leader any non-compliance
Supports continual improvement of Clinical Engineering processes through participation in Quality System audits and acts as an auditor when required
Orders appropriate spare parts, complying with Quality System and understands the stock control system
Ensures that personal and general test equipment is within calibration dates, maintained to acceptable and professional standards and takes responsibility for all tools and equipment within their care.
Participates in group meetings and team briefings with the Head of Clinical Engineering and others as required.
Generates income for the Trust through participating in external customer contract work.
Provides assistance to other colleagues within Clinical Engineering and assists in the Medical Equipment Library as required.

Job responsibilities1. Key Technical Tasks
1.1. Performs under close supervision, safety testing to BS EN 60601 and 62353 Safety Standards for Medical Devices and acceptance testing to Managing Medical Devices April 2015 MHRA standard.
1.2. Performs under close supervision diagnostic and fault finding procedures on medical equipment.
1.3. Performs under close supervision, calibration, quality control and functional checks, on patient critical medical equipment.
1.4. Works safely with potentially fatal voltages and currents when repairing medical equipment under close supervision.
1.5. Works safely with compressed gases when repairing medical equipment under close supervision.
1.6. Uses tools and equipment in the mechanical workshop safely and appropriately under close supervision.
1.1. Works flexibly and occasionally outside normal working hours to meet service requirements. Participates in an out-of-hours on-call rota as required.
1.2. Assists colleagues when required to move large or heavy equipment which can be in excess of 25kg.
1.3. Works away from the normal base under close supervision. e.g. other Hospitals, Healthcare providers.
1.4. Participates in a rota when required to ensure workshop is manned during core hours.
1.5. When working in other departments, liaises with local heads of department, ward managers or their representatives as appropriate. The Post holder will behave courteously and professionally at all times and seek to ensure that the highest level of service is provided.
1.6. Transports medical devices and test equipment between sites using Trusts or own vehicle as required
1.7. Performs other appropriate duties, which may be required from time to time by the department management.
Person Specification- 5 GCSE passes at Grade C /4 or above to include English, Mathematics and Science or equivalent level of qualification
- Proven interest in Electronics and Technology
- Able to work well within a busy working environment and meet reasonable deadlines
- Able to manoeuvre medium to heavy loads, which could be in excess of 25kg, in varying locations
- Enthusiastic, reliable, honest and trustworthy
- Demonstrable experience of working in a service environment
