Job Description
Civil Mechanical Engineer
6-month contract - Inside IR35 - Rate TBC
Clearance: Must hold or be eligible for SC security clearance
You will manage the design and integration of the Physical Infrastructure Layer. You will translate the space, power, and cooling needs of the Communications and IP teams into detailed requirements for our container and mast suppliers. You are the final authority on whether a physical solution is fit for purpose, ensuring it can be transported, deployed, and operated in the most demanding climates on Earth.
Your Focus: Deployable Structures, Power Distribution, HVAC, and Supplier Technical Oversight
Key Responsibilities
Infrastructure Design Integration
System-Level Architecture: Design the internal layout for the 6m (20ft) Core Container and the Tactical Box (Size, Weight, Power, and Cost).
Thermal Management (HVAC): Calculate the total thermal load of the Servers, Switches, Cores
Power Systems: Design the AC/DC power distribution architecture
Supplier Technical Management
Detailed Specification: Author and manage the Technical Requirements Documents (TRD)
Design Oversight: Review supplier CAD models for wind loading, and electrical schematics
Acceptance Testing: Lead Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) at supplier sites to verify
Ruggedisation Compliance
Environmental Hardening: Ensure all enclosures meet MIL-STD-810H (for shock, vibration, humidity, and sand)
Ingress Protection: Guarantee external tactical boxes to protect against high-pressure water jets
Safety Ergonomics: Design internal rack accessibility and external mast deployment procedures
Documentation Lifecycle Support
The Physical Build Book: Create detailed assembly and maintenance manuals
Field Support: Perform root-cause analysis on mechanical failures (eg, mast deployment jams or HVAC leaks) identified during the build or trial stages.
Technical Proficiency Profile
CAD/CAM Tools: Proficiency in SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, or AutoCAD
Thermal Modeling: Experience with CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) tools
Power Engineering: Deep understanding of DC power systems (24V/48V)
Mast/Structural Systems: Knowledge of telescopic/pneumatic mast mechanics
Experience: With specifically focused on deployable shelters, mobile command centers, or tactical trailers.
Defense Standards: Proven experience
Project Management: Experience managing high-value technical suppliers and holding them accountable to tight delivery schedules.
