Chief Invigilator

Location: Hunterhouse College, Upper Lisburn Road, Belfast
Employed by: CCEA
Reports To: Examinations Officer / Senior Leadership Team
Contract Type: Seasonal
Salary: £18.05 per hour
Hours: (typically) 21 hours per week, seasonal - during the summer examination period

Job Purpose:

The Chief Invigilator is responsible for overseeing the smooth and secure administration of external and internal examinations in accordance with the regulations set by the relevant examination boards and the school's policies. This role ensures that all candidates have an equal opportunity to demonstrate their abilities in a controlled and supportive environment. The successful candidate will be employed by CCEA and full training will be given.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Supervision:

  • Lead and coordinate a team of invigilators during examination sessions.
  • Ensure all invigilators are fully briefed on their duties and responsibilities.
  • Act as the main point of contact for invigilators, candidates, and school staff during exams.
  • Complete daily timesheets on behalf of the invigilation team.

Exam Preparation:

  • Attend annual training sessions delivered by CCEA.
  • Liaise with the Examinations Officer to receive and check exam materials.
  • Ensure exam rooms are set up correctly and in accordance with seating plans and JCQ (or relevant body) regulations.
  • Ensure candidate cards are laid out according to seating plans.
  • Be aware of and implement candidate access arrangements
  • Conduct final checks on exam papers, materials, and complete candidate attendance registers.

During the Exam:

  • Start and end exams in accordance with official procedures.
  • Maintain the integrity and security of the examination environment.
  • Deal with any irregularities or emergencies calmly and efficiently.
  • Ensure candidates are supervised at all times and that exam conditions are maintained.
  • Record irregularities on an Incident Log.

Post-Exam Duties:

  • Collect and check completed scripts and ensure they are securely returned to the Examinations Officer.
  • Complete and submit any required reports or incident forms.
  • Debrief with invigilators and provide feedback to improve future sessions.

Person Specification:

Essential:

  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Strong leadership and communication abilities.
  • High level of integrity and attention to detail.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and handle sensitive situations discreetly.
  • Availability during key exam periods (e.g., May-June, November).

Desirable:

  • Previous experience as an invigilator or in an educational setting.
  • Knowledge of JCQ or other relevant examination board regulations.
  • First aid training or emergency response experience.
