Job Description

Weare looking for a Bank Catering Assistant to join our hardworking, busy andfriendly team

Wehave our own dedicated team of Catering Assistants, however from time to timewe require additional team members to ensure we continue to provide a qualityservice within the Hospice.

Asa Bank Catering Assistant, we will call you to offer occasional shifts, thismay be planned or at short notice, for a full shift or as ad hoc additionalhours, so flexibility and commitment is essential and will include evenings andweekends.

Main duties of the job

Youwill be required to assist the Head Chef and Cooks in the preparation of foodto the highest standards of hygiene and quality, and to ensure the higheststandards of cleanliness and hygiene in the kitchen and dining areas.

The idealcandidate will have previous catering experience,and within a healthcare environment would be desirable. You will have excellent customer serviceskills and be a flexible team player.

StElizabeth Hospice is an independent charity and hospice, which improves lifefor people in the East Suffolk, Great Yarmouth and Waveney areas living with aprogressive or life-limiting illness.

Establishedin 1989, the hospice has built a reputation for delivering high-level care topatients and the community it serves. Through medicine and therapy, they easepain; give life purpose and make life liveable. Last year the charity supportedover 4,000 patients and their families.

Thehospices work is centred on the individual's needs and they provide specialistsupport wherever it is needed; whether that is in the home, another setting inthe community, in hospital or in the hospice itself. Support is provided topatients and their families via the Inpatient Unit, the Community CareUnit including outpatients clinics,home visits from the community nursing, medical or therapy team, the OneCall24/7 telephone helpline and bereavement support

In 2023, St Elizabeth Hospice merged with EastCoast Hospice to form a collaborative approach to developing achievable andsustainable specialist palliative care services for people living the GreatYarmouth & Waveney area.

JOB DESCRIPTION CATERING ASSISTANT

REPORTS TO HEAD CHEF

BASED AT ST ELIZABETH HOSPICE

JOB SUMMARY

To assist the HeadChef and Cooks in the preparation of food to the highest standards of hygieneand quality and to ensure the highest standards of cleanliness and hygiene inthe kitchen and dining areas.

SAFEGUARDING RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Demonstratea commitment to keeping adults and young people safe

  • Reportany safeguarding concerns in the workplace to the appropriate person
  • Maintainan awareness of the Hospices policies in relation to safeguarding

PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Toassist with the preparation and serving of food.
  • Toliaise with in patients and the Community on a daily basis to get their menuchoice advising as necessary on special requirements and dietary needs, andnutrition.
  • Toprovide front of house service including to take payment for meals from staffand visitors.
  • Responsiblefor the preparation and cooking of some meals such as breakfasts, jacket potatoes,paninis, sandwiches, pastas, omelettes, soups and desserts.
  • Toprovide a front of house service for colleagues and visitors during the diningroom open hours.
  • Ensurevending machines are replenished as required.
  • Toensure that the coffee machines are kept fully stocked.
  • Asfar as possible to respond immediately to patient food requests.
  • Tooperate various machines and equipment in relation to the preparation of foodand cleaning of the kitchen and dining areas.
  • Toclean the catering areas, food trolleys and dining area daily.
  • Toremove rubbish etc regularly from the kitchen areas.
  • Towash up crockery, cutlery, pans etc as necessary, either with dishwasher ormanually.
  • Participatein regular stock takes
  • Managedeliveries into the kitchen, ensure kitchen is kept clear and safe at alltimes.
  • Toassist with the serving of meals to patients, staff and visitors.
  • Tocarry out more in depth cleaning of kitchen areas as scheduled.
  • Toassist in ensuring waste within the catering department is kept to a minimum.
  • Preparationof foods for the Hospice Cafes as directed by Cook or Head Chef.
  • To prepare the hot trolley for service of patient meals asrequired.
  • Toundertake training as required.
  • Tocover other Catering Assistant shifts in the event of annual leave and sicknessabsence.
  • Tohand over all relevant information to other members of the catering team.
  • Maintain a safe working environment throughobservation and implementation of Health and Safety and Environmental HealthRegulations in order to meet statutory and departmental requirements
  • To recognise indications of staff stressand to facilitate staff support.
  • Toparticipate in the induction of all new staff and volunteers as required.
  • Torecognise the value of volunteer contribution and play an active part in theirsupport and development where appropriate.
  • Towork in other areas of the Hospice as required.

EDUCATIONALRESPONSIBILITIES

  • Toparticipate in the Hospice education programme.
  • Togive feedback from attended education programmes/study days.

PERSONALDEVELOPMENT

  • Todevise with the Chef a personal development plan in line with the Hospiceobjectives and personal needs.
  • Tomaintain and increase personal professional skills.

ORGANISATIONALRESPONSIBILITIES

  • Towork at all times within the policies of the Hospice and act within CareStandards at all times.
  • Touphold the hospice and individual team values at all times.
  • Toensure effective use of resources.
  • Torespect at all times the confidentiality of information covering patients,staff and volunteers.
  • Toplay an active part in the development and maintenance of good relationshipswith all who have business with the Hospice.
  • Topromote the Hospice philosophy of care towards patients, relatives andvisitors.
  • Because of the nature of the Hospice andits work, the post holder may on occasion be asked to undertake other duties tohelp maintain our high standard of care.
