Band 7 Senior Physiotherapist, Trauma and Burns Critical Care

A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly qualified, enthusiastic Team Lead Physiotherapist to join our Trauma & Burns Critical Care team in a part-time post (22.5 hours per week).

As a regional Major Trauma, spinal cord injury & burns centre, the successful candidate will take a lead role in the specialist assessment & management of patients within these pathways. You will work alongside another team lead physiotherapist within the service, clinical specialists & consultant physiotherapists, & the wider MDT including Consultants, nursing staff, & ACPs, to support the delivery & development of this expanding service.

As the centre for Royal Defence Medicine, there is a unique opportunity to collaborate with the RCDM on critical incident planning, education, & developing services for ballistic trauma.

There is a strong commitment to MDT service delivery and research. The successful individual will have the opportunity to lead & participate in research & service development.

Candidates should have significant ICU experience including working with patients following major trauma, spinal cord injury and Traumatic Brain Injury. This is an ideal opportunity for someone who wishes to develop their clinical leadership skills & broaden their experience in this specialty area.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to work autonomously, undertaking specialist, advanced assessments of patients with diverse or complex trauma, neurological, spinal cord injury and burns presentations.

They will be expected to use advanced clinical reasoning, analytical and investigative skills to interpret clinical and non-clinical facts in order to provide an accurate diagnosis or differential diagnosis of their condition.

The post holder will work alongside the wider critical care team, supporting staff development, clinical teaching of staff and undergraduates who are on placement within the specialty as well as service and policy development.

There will be an expectation for active participation in service evaluation and quality improvement projects, with the opportunity to present outcomes at local, national and international platforms. The post-holder will be expected to have an awareness of current evidence in critical care, major trauma and neuro physiotherapy and its application to clinical practice, using advanced clinical reasoning skills.

Key skills for this post include confidence in communication, strong leadership, collaborative working with peers, and a personal desire to develop. You must be able to demonstrate excellent time management skills day to day, as a well as proactive management of team operational planning such as appraisals, rotation planning, respiratory competency training and preceptorship and new staff induction.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Appropriate Physiotherapy or professional qualification e.g. MCSP/ BSc or MSc.
  • Registration with Health Care Professions Council
  • CSP or equivalent professional registration
  • Evidence of commitment to advanced clinical and non-clinical continued professional development within own speciality, e.g. post registration training, management / Leadership competencies and evidence of a detailed personal development portfolio
  • Relevant, accredited, postgraduate education/courses in respiratory physiotherapy
  • Post registration MSc modules in areas relevant to leadership & management, critical care, trauma and neuro
  • Attended student educator course
  • Membership of relevant special interest groups.
  • ASIA accredited
Experience
  • Significant post registration experience of which considerable experience has been within intensive care as a senior physiotherapist in a NHS organisation. To include experience of working with major trauma, spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries. Experience of staff management including supervision and of development and performance management of staff.
  • Significant experience in education and clinical training of others.
  • Some experience of clinical/service evaluation
  • Proficient knowledge and skill in the specialist assessment and treatment of a wide range of complex acute ventilated and self-ventilating patients in the critical care setting.
  • Excellent knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
  • Awareness of current evidence in critical care, major trauma and neuro physiotherapy and application to clinical practice, using advanced clinical reasoning skills.
  • Good understanding of IT systems and its application to clinical practice.
  • Experience of treating acute burn injuries and ballistic trauma
  • Good knowledge and application of all areas of Clinical Governance including Quality, Audit and Risk management
  • Understands the legal responsibilities of the profession
  • Good understanding of principles of data and statistics and experience of their use in evaluation of service delivery
  • Knowledge and understanding of the research process.
  • Teaching experience to university students and multi-professional groups with evidence of ability to deliver high quality presentations
