Job Description
Band 6 Specialist School Nurse- SEND - Leatherhead

We are looking for a compassionate and experienced Specialist School Nurse to oversee the healthcare provision for children and young people aged 2-19 with severe, profound, and multiple learning and physical difficulties. In this role, you will offer expert training, guidance, and support to school staff, parents, and carers, ensuring the best possible care for every child. You will also take a lead role in managing and supporting the school nurse and assistant practitioner within your team, helping to create a collaborative, nurturing environment where everyone can thrive.

This role is Term Time only and is based at Woodlands School in Leatherhead.

Main duties of the job
  • Build strong, empathetic relationships with families, school staff, and professionals.
  • Share sensitive information with care and support inclusive communication methods like Makaton and PECs.
  • Provide and lead high-quality nursing care, including complex procedures (clinical leadership & care).
  • Conduct holistic assessments, respond to emergencies, and guide families in managing health needs, upholding dignity and respect.
  • Organise nursing support to meet changing needs (service coordination).
  • Step in for the Clinical Team Leader as needed and help shape services through team input and planning.
  • Lead training for school staff, mentor student nurses, and foster professional growth within the team (training & development).
  • Support a culture of continuous learning and reflective practice.
  • Contribute to audits, service reviews, and policy development (governance & quality).
  • Manage clinical resources and maintain clear, accurate records. Support the use of digital systems for safe, effective documentation.

The ideal candidate

We'd love to hear from you if you have:

  • RGN and/or RSCN
  • Minimum of two years post-registration experience as a nurse at band 5
  • Experience of working with children with additional needs
  • Good working knowledge of Child Protection policy & procedures
  • Clear understanding of community health services
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to work autonomously & prioritise own work effectively
  • Learning disability nurse qualification
  • Experience of working with children with complex health needs
  • Previous working experience in a special school setting
  • Experience of initiating & participating in clinical audits

Other requirements: Full UK Driving Licence with a car insured for business use.
