The post holder will work as a Band 6 Charge Nurse/Sister at Hodge Hill, providing visible clinical leadership, supervision, and expert nursing care within the team. They will act as a role model, ensuring high standards of safe, effective, and person-centred care are delivered consistently across the service.

A key aspect of the role will be the coordination of care for patients requiring intravenous therapies, including intravenous antibiotics and other IV treatments. The post holder will work closely with the OPAT (Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy) team to manage referrals, ensure continuity of care, and monitor existing patients on the IV antibiotics list. They will also oversee and support the care of patients attending Hodge Hill for other IV therapy needs, ensuring these are delivered safely and effectively.
The Charge Nurse/Sister will oversee the safe day-to-day running of the unit, including shift coordination, caseload allocation, and the supervision of Band 5 nurses. They will contribute to service improvement, clinical governance, and audit activity, supporting the development of best practice and innovation in care delivery.
Main duties of the job- Assess patients prior to treatment, ensuring suitability for infusion therapy and that they are fully informed about the process.
- Administer a wide range of IV therapies via IV lines, ports, and vascular access devices.
- Manage intravenous catheters and access ports with precision and care.
- Monitor patients closely during infusions, promptly recognising and managing any side effects or complications.
- Collect blood samples post-treatment and ensure they are processed and sent to BHH according to clinical requirements.
- Provide reassurance, education, and clear explanations to patients and their families, supporting them throughout their treatment journey.
- Demonstrate expertise with infusion equipment, including IV pumps and monitoring devices.
- Maintain accurate, detailed documentation for all patient treatments and outcomes.
- Provide strong clinical leadership, acting as a role model for nursing staff and students.
- Lead the safe day-to-day operation of the infusion suite, including shift coordination and caseload allocation.
- Supervise, mentor, and support Band 5 nurses, healthcare support workers, and students.
- Work closely with the OPAT team to coordinate referrals and ensure continuity of care for patients on the IV antibiotics list.
- Ensure high standards of communication, documentation, and clinical handover.
Service provision is Monday to Sunday, 8:00am 8:00pm. Staff will work 12-hour shifts on a rota basis to ensure full service cover.

Person Specification Qualifications- Registered Adult Nurse on the NMC register
- Health care management / leadership qualification
- Substantial post registration experience working in a complex health care setting / Acute NHS care setting supervising / mentoring junior staff
- Evidence of professional /clinical knowledge in area supplemented by specialist clinical and or managerial training and CPD
- Can demonstrate understanding / experience / willingness to be a practice based supervisor / assessor as detailed in the Nursing & Midwifery Council ( NMC ) standards for student supervision and assessment
- Professional portfolio which demonstrates continuing professional development, evidence of ability to maintain professional registration
- Relevant and recent clinical experience within the speciality /acute care setting, including the supervision /education of junior staff
- Experience of mentoring undergraduate students
- Evidence of ability to lead /coordinate a shift /area of department
- Experience in learning from incidents /complaints and supporting changes in practice.
