Due to the continued development and expansion of the Pre Operative Assessment Unit an exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic experienced Band 5 Staff Nurse to become part of a well established and progressive team. A challenging and busy environment the Pre Operative Assessment Service works within UHB as a specialist team assessing a wide group of patients prior to surgery. You will be expected to uphold and ensure that high standards of care and professionalism are maintained and delivered. This is an autonomous role where the post holder will be responsible for the assessment of care needs of patients and planning programmes of care, implementation and the evaluation of these programmes without direct supervision, taking ownership and responsibility for your patients and clinic caseload. You will action investigation results to ensure your patients are fit for surgery. The post holder will also provide clinical examination and enable patients to plan their surgical journey in partnership with senior colleagues to ensure patient safety during surgery and anaesthesia.
Main duties of the jobThis post is not suitable for newly qualified nurses. Candidates need to have significant surgical/medical experience before applying for this post.
You will be appointed a mentor to support you in your new role and further training will be provided for clinical examination (heart and lung assessment). This is an exciting role for an experienced Registered Nurse to work closely with patients to help plan their surgical journey working closely with senior colleagues to ensure that patients are safe to undergo surgery and anaesthesia.

Qualifications- Evidence of professional and clinical knowledge acquired through training to degree/diploma level leading to Professional registration on the appropriate part of the NMC register i.e. (Adult / Child / Learning Disability or Mental Health)
- Evidence of undergraduate education for newly qualified nurses / or post graduate continuing professional development for registered nurses who have post registration experience
- Previous / recent experience or working in an acute secondary health and care setting (can include undergraduate student placements within the last 12 months)
- Willingness to become a practice supervisor / assessor to or meets Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards for student supervision and assessment
- Demonstrable understanding and knowledge of the NMC code of conduct and the proficiencies and standards for registered nurses can apply this to undergraduate training or post graduate practice

- Experience in working in an Acute NHS practice setting as an undergraduate student nurse or post graduate registered nurse.
- Demonstrable communication and relationship management skills which include
- Listening - writing - reading - speaking in English with understanding of contemporaneous record keeping
- Good IT skills ability to record information electronically
- Competent in a range of clinical skills/ nursing procedures willingness to undertake expanded practices relevant to the scope of practice required
- Competent in managing the care of a group of patients / shift management (take charge of the practice setting in the absence of more senior staff) relevant to the practice setting.
