About the RoleAssistant Editors are research subject matter experts who handle manuscripts from screening through post acceptance processes, ensuring integrity and quality. Entry level with limited prior handling editor experience, they bring expertise as authors or reviewers.
Key Responsibilities- Screen and triage manuscripts within your subject area and make initial suitability decisions.
- Raise integrity concerns via appropriate channels.
- Select and invite reviewers, evaluate their reports, and make decisions to accept, reject, revise, or refer.
- Assess revised manuscripts for quality and completeness and determine final decisions or the need for further review.
- When rejecting, identify target titles within the portfolio for transfer.
- Review rebuttal submissions promptly and take appropriate action.
- Participate in proof of concept projects, report findings within stipulated timelines.
- Collect and report performance improvement data, identifying trends and opportunities.
- Engage with senior colleagues and line managers on performance and improvement.
- Collaborate with handling editors in subject area clusters across Publishing Development, the Wiley Peer Review Desk, and the Comprehensive Editorial Evaluation Team.
- Maintain subject area expertise, attend seminars, webinars, and conferences; receive formal system and peer to peer training.
- PhD or equivalent advanced degree in Education research.
- 3-5 years of primary research experience in the relevant field (time spent on a PhD counts).
- 1-2 years of scholarly publishing experience, at least one year as a professional editor or Editorial Associate.
- Basic knowledge of the publishing process.
- High level knowledge of the peer review process.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to collaborate.
- "Head down" focus on workload and the ability to stay focused.
- Fluency in English with excellent writing and speaking skills.
- Proven interest in scholarly publishing.
- Experience as a reviewer or editor.
- Knowledge of common editorial policies and practices.
- Experience using Editorial Manager, ScholarOne, Phenom, or similar.
- Broad understanding of the scholarly publishing business, including the transition to Open Access.
- Proficiency in a non English language (desirable but not essential for non English language journals).
- Meeting free Friday afternoons.

Salary Range25,600 GBP to 34,933 GBP.
