Animal Welfare Officer

Animal Welfare Officer Craigavon / Banbridge locality Temporary up to 3 months

Rate of Pay: £22.23 per hour

Hours of Work: Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm

A flexible working scheme is in operation. Additional occasional weekday out of hours working will be required for which time off in lieu will be available. In addition, the post holder may be required to undertake shared responsibility for responding to afterhours emergency call outs across Northern Ireland, for which an allowance will be paid.

The Client:

Local Government body based in Armagh, Banbridge & Craigavon, serving local residents.

The Role:

To carry out the enforcement requirements of the Welfare of Animals Act (Northern Ireland) 2011, in respect of non-farmed animals; ensuring that investigations into complaints in respect of unnecessary suffering are completed and appropriate action taken and to endeavour to prevent unnecessary suffering and promote good practice and compassion in the care of non-farmed animals.

Essential Criteria:

It is essential that applicants have a minimum of:

• At least HNC level in Animal Care/Animal Management or a related discipline
• At least 1years' experience in the handling of non-farmed animals in furtherance of the objectives of a business or other working environment. This experience must include:
  • Providing advice and guidance to members of the public
  • Producing written reports and maintaining records
  • Partnership working with other public or professional bodies

Where applicants do not possess a relevant HNC level in Animal Care/Animal Management or a related discipline must demonstrate 2 years' experience in the professional care/management and handling of non-farmed animals in furtherance of the objectives of a business or other working environment as detailed above.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Competent in the use of Microsoft Office packages
• Ability to deal effectively with the public, handling and resolving matters in difficult situations
• Ability to work on own initiative and take reasoned decisions
• Ability to work as part of a team and with other agencies
• Demonstrate problem solving skills
• High level of commitment and interest towards the post
• Hold a full current driving licence (valid in the UK)

Desirable Criteria:

• Degree in Animal Care/Animal Management or a related discipline
• 1 years' experience in enforcement processes
• Knowledge of relevant legislation pertaining to animal welfare matters

In addition to the standard pre-employment checks this position will also be subject to receipt of a satisfactory Basic Access NI check.
