Shift Pattern

The shift pattern for this post is 24/7, days and nights.

Role Purpose

The Critical Care Department QEUH is in the position to offer staff with relevant clinical experience and qualifications as Advanced Nurse Practitioner, currently operating within an acute adult hospital setting, the opportunity to join the existing Advanced Critical Care Nurse Practitioner team to further develop the service. A priority of the Critical Care department is to expand the role of the ACCNP to provide an Outreach service by having two ACCNPs on day shift, 7 days/week. The purpose is for critical care discharge to follow up in the wards post critical care step downs and support ongoing care. The ACCNPs will provide support to the ward staff by providing a source of advice, education and care as required to staff, the patient and family and identify patients that may require follow up from critical care after hospital discharge.

Furthermore, the plan is to involve ACCNPs in the intra/inter hospital transfer of unventilated, stable patients.

Training and Support

Applications from Advanced Nurse Practitioners with relevant clinical experience in the acute adult setting are welcome. Training and support will be available to successful applicants to support development within the ACCNP role.

Applications are also welcome from registered nursing staff with appropriate post registration experience - and with appropriate experience in the Critical Care setting. Successful applicants will be supported, as an ANP trainee to undertake a fully funded Post graduate Diploma in Advanced Nursing Practice from Napier University.

The programme involves 3 double Masters level modules:

  • Advanced patient history taking and clinical examination (this module is run by NHS Lothian and is accredited by Napier University - 40 credits at Masters level)
  • Professional Clinical Work based Learning (NHS Lothian/Napier University - 40 credits at M level)
  • Non medical Prescribing (Napier University - 40 credits at M-level)

The programme will be undertaken over a two year period. Trainees will be supported with study days and supervised practice to complete all the modules, and you will need to pass each module to progress. On successful completion of the programme you will meet the requirements to become a Non medical Prescriber. Advanced Nurse Practitioner. The post will be paid at Band 7 (subject to Annexe 21) for the training period and on successful completion of training at Band 7.
