Advanced BMS - Biochemistry (Night duty)

HCA Laboratories has over 35 years' experience delivering pathology services across acute care within HCA Hospitals, IVF clinics, insurance providers, health screening programmes, and GP services. We cover all major pathology disciplines including allergy, biochemistry and endocrinology, haematology and blood transfusion, histopathology and cytology, immunology, microbiology and serology-supported by state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation.

About the Role

We are seeking an Advanced Biomedical Scientist to support the delivery of a comprehensive night service in Clinical Biochemistry. You'll be responsible for the rapid and accurate processing of samples and ensuring high standards of quality and service throughout the night shift.

Please note as part of this role, you will also need to be flexible to work day shifts during your training period (up to 3 months) as and when required. There also may be occasional day shifts for further training that will be mandatory.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively within the night shift team to ensure smooth service delivery.
  • Ensure analysers and equipment are functioning correctly.
  • Complete internal and external quality control schemes.
  • Process samples promptly to meet turnaround times.
  • Interpret, technically validate and authorise results.
  • Communicate critically abnormal results promptly.
  • Manage incomplete lists and ensure no outstanding samples/tests remain.
  • Monitor and record results from referral laboratories.
  • Provide Advanced BMS support and supervise MLA staff when required.
  • Liaise with Specimen Reception and all Blood Sciences sections.
  • Use the Laboratory IT systems appropriately and effectively.
  • Communicate professionally and courteously with colleagues, clients and service users.
  • Provide guidance on sample types when required.
  • Manage stock control and rotation where needed.
  • Complete efficient handover to the day team.
  • Escalate issues encountered on shift when necessary.
  • Maintain professional development in line with IBMS and HCPC standards.

Skills & Experience

  • HCPC Registered
  • MSc preferable
  • Extensive Biochemistry experience in a Diagnostic Lab
  • Member of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences
  • Evidence of continual personal development
  • Up to date knowledge of Clinical Biochemistry (preferably Specialist Portfolio)
  • Used to multitasking and good at managing high volumes of samples
