This role will:
- Provide IT training, advice and guidance to visually impaired people in their homes or at the Guardian Centre.
- Advise and train visually impaired people in the use of specialist accessible software and specialist features of mainstream technology.
- Manage, develop and deliver the train the trainer scheme to volunteers.
- Maintaining sufficient volunteers to meet the increased digital demand.
- To assess and train blind and partially sighted people in the use of accessibility software and technology.
- To provide general IT training with the aim of assisting members to achieve personal goals (e.g. enable access to smart phones and tablets and the use of email to keep in touch with relatives or do online shopping).
- To maintain and train volunteers in accessible technology (train the trainer) enabling them to provide assistive support to clients.
- To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of specialist access software and standard accessibility features.
- Provide demonstrations of the equipment in the Community such as Libraries, Community Centres, Voluntary organisations and Local Authority bases.
- Demonstrate and facilitate access to Alexa to increase daily living independence and reduce isolation.
- To provide general IT support to staff and maintain company website.
- To support colleagues and members with demonstrating equipment (e.g. at Awareness presentation events).
- To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the functions and capabilities of the full range of IT devices (e.g. smartphones, tablets, laptops and PCs).
- Proven experience of working effectively in an information focused role.
- Confident and proficient with IT packages including Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Access, Outlook and the Internet.
- Experience of using accessible software, i.e. Jaws, Windows Magnifier, NVDA.
- Ability to undertake and prepare effective management and monitoring reports with minimal supervision.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and organisational skills.
- Active interest and current knowledge of the issues affecting people who are blind or partially sighted.
- Quick learner with the ability to respond to changes positively and swiftly and an understanding of new information technology and systems.
- Team player who is able to work using own initiative and highly adaptable to surrounding event outside of remit.
- Ability to work efficiently and effectively under pressure whilst maintaining a professional and friendly approach.
- People skills which encompass empathy, ability to listen, willingness to learn, adaptability and commitment.
- Flexible, committed, enthusiastic and energetic with a proactive attitude to problem solving.
- Experience of giving information/advice tot he general public and service users.
- Experience of sight loss either through personal experience of that of a family member or close friend.
- Special Requirements
- The postholder may be expected to work flexible hours according to the needs of the service. There may be some occasions if necessary from some evenings/weekends.
- The post involves a good knowledge of the borough and the ability to travel around the borough independently.
