Salary and Hours

Starting salary: £35,875 a year for a 39 hour week (inc 20% unsocial).

Initial training is 37 hours a week. After training, you can choose to work 37, 39 or 41 hours a week. Annual salary:

  • 37 hours a week - £33,746 a year
  • 39 hours a week - £35,875 a year
  • 41 hours a week - £38,003 a year

Benefits: 25 days annual holiday (30 days after 10 years), paid time off for public holidays, 1 extra privilege day, cycle to work scheme, travel loans.

Role

Prison officers protect the public and help make an impact on prisoners' lives. You'll act as a peacekeeper, counsellor, teacher and more, building constructive positive relationships with prisoners and working as part of a team to keep the prison safe.

Key Responsibilities
  • Protect the public and maintain security.
  • Support prisoners in achieving positive change.
  • Work during various shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays.
Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Meet Civil Service nationality requirements (see below).
  • Pass medical and fitness assessment, including eyesight (both with and without correction) and hearing (without hearing aids).
  • For category A (high security) prisons, must have lived in the UK for the last 3 years.
Nationality Requirements
  • Republic of Ireland nationals.
  • Commonwealth nationals with right to work in the UK.
  • EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein nationals and family members with settled or pre settled status under the EUSS (or who were eligible on 31 Dec 2020).
  • Turkish nationals and certain family members with right to work in the Civil Service.

Travel and Working Hours

Prison is in a rural location; a driving licence and own transport are beneficial but not essential unless specified.
