This is a practical, hands-on role where you'll work alongside your team, solve problems and take ownership of maintaining high standards. You'll also work closely with colleagues in Stores, Sales and the Workshop to ensure deliveries, stock movements and customer requirements are handled effectively.
What you'll be doing as the Yard Supervisor.
- Leading and coordinating the daily activities of the Yard team, allocating work and monitoring progress.
- Receiving, unloading and checking deliveries against purchase orders and delivery notes.
- Maintaining accurate stock records, carrying out stock checks and investigating discrepancies.
- Ensuring products are correctly identified, rotated and stored safely in designated locations.
- Coordinating the picking, packing, preparation, loading and unloading of goods for deliveries and customer collections.
- Ensuring stock movements and materials issued from the yard are supported by the correct paperwork.
- Working with the Stores, Sales and Workshop teams to meet operational and customer requirements.
- Maintaining a clean, safe and organised working environment and identifying ways to improve efficiency.
- Supporting the wider Stores and Yard teams, including making occasional deliveries when required.
What we're looking for
You'll have previous experience supervising or managing a small operational team and be comfortable taking responsibility for the day-to-day organisation of a busy working environment.
You'll also be someone who:
- Leads by example and is happy to work alongside the team.
- Can allocate work, set clear expectations and maintain standards.
- Is organised, proactive and able to prioritise competing demands.
- Takes ownership of problems and follows them through to resolution.
- Has a good eye for detail when checking deliveries and maintaining stock records.
- Communicates clearly and works well with colleagues across different departments.
- Understands the importance of health and safety and safe working practices.
- Is comfortable using computerised systems or willing to learn.
- Holds a full UK driving licence.
Experience that would be an advantage
Experience in a yard, warehouse, stores, builders' merchant, distribution or similar operational environment would be beneficial.
Experience of stock control, goods-in procedures and vehicle loading and unloading would also be useful. A current forklift licence or relevant materials-handling qualification would be an advantage, but forklift training can be provided in-house if required.
Training and development
You'll receive support to develop your knowledge of the products, stock procedures and business systems. As you become established in the role, there will be opportunities to take on additional stock control and administrative responsibilities.
Why consider this opportunity?
This is an opportunity to take ownership of an important operational area, lead a team and make a real difference to stock accuracy, efficiency and customer service.
You'll be joining an experienced team where your initiative, organisation and practical approach will be valued, with scope to develop your responsibilities as your knowledge of the business grows.
