Coping with a cancer diagnosis or complex haematology treatment is challenging, and for some patients, it also brings financial worries and unforeseen costs. We are seeking a compassionate individual to assist patients and their carers in understanding their entitlements and accessing financial support, enabling them to focus on their treatment.
Applicants should have substantial experience in providing specialist benefits advice and advocacy within organizations such as the NHS, Citizens Advice, or similar. Relevant recent training, client-centered benefits advice experience, and a general knowledge of housing, employment, and consumer law are essential, along with tribunal representation experience.
The role requires strong communication skills, the ability to work under pressure to strict deadlines, and attention to detail. You will be based in our friendly and supportive department at the UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre, Huntley Street, London WC1E 6DH.
You will work with in-patients and out-patients diagnosed with cancer or haematological conditions such as sickle cell disease and thalassaemia. Your duties include meeting patients or their representatives face-to-face, via MS Teams, or by phone to assess welfare and benefits needs, and assisting with benefit applications and grants. You will also prepare mandatory reconsideration and tribunal packs, support patients throughout review processes, and communicate with multiple agencies, maintaining accurate documentation.
