W2 Professorship (with tenure track to W3) in the Dynamics of Biological Systems (m/f/x)

The Department of Life Sciences in the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology at Saarland University in Saarbrücken is inviting applications for the following position, which should ideally align with and enhance the university's existing research priorities. The research conducted at the Department of Life Sciences focuses on metabolism, epigenetics and protein homoeostasis and there is a strong interest in the development and application of cellular engineering methods to uncover novel molecular mechanisms. The Department has close interdisciplinary research ties to research groups working in the fields of biophysics, bioinformatics, pharmacy and medicine. W2 Professorship (with tenure track to W3) in the Dynamics of Biological Systems (m/f/x; reference number W2625). Tenure track professors are entitled to supervise Bachelor's, Master's and PhD students and are treated in this respect as equivalent to professors at the faculty. If at the end of the pre-tenure period of a maximum of 6 years, the appointee has an outstanding performance rating, the position will be upgraded to a permanent professorship (lifetime tenure) on the German academic salary scale W3. We are looking for an internationally recognized scientist working in the field of cellular physiology. The ideal candidate currently heads a junior research group or holds a junior professorship and has established an international research profile in the areas of subcellular compartmentalization, cellular heterogeneity or cellular signal transduction in a multicellular eukaryotic model organism. Ideally, the successful candidate will focus on gaining molecular and/or time-resolved mechanistic insights and will be capable of aligning their work with areas of current research interest in the Department of Biology, including metabolism, epigenetics and protein homoeostasis. The candidate should be willing to apply omics tools or cellular engineering approaches in their work. The professorship will be based at the Center for Human and Molecular Biology (ZHMB) on the Saar-brücken campus and the person appointed will be expected to play an active role in strengthening current and future research activities. The university expressly encourages close collaborative involvement with the Center for Bioinformatics, the Center for Biophysics and the Faculty of Medicine. We expect the successful candidate to interact closely with the numerous research institutions located on and around the university campus, such as the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saar (HIPS) and the Leibniz Institute for New Materials (INM), and to actively participate in developing joint priority projects that support the university's long-term strategic goals. The successful candidate will teach physiology to students on the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in Human and Molecular Biology and to students studying biology as part of their teacher training degree. We value engagement with and a strong commitment to the German-French double degree programmes in Biology with the University of Strasbourg (BSc and MSc) as well as support for teaching activities in neighbouring disciplines in the natural sciences. The person appointed will be expected to contribute innovative teaching concepts at all levels of academic study (Bachelor's, Master's, teacher training programmes, PhD) and be willing to teach in English or German, as well as provide dedicated thesis supervision to students and to support and foster junior researchers. The appointments will be made in accordance with the general provisions of German public sector employment law. Candidates must have experience in and an aptitude for academic teaching. They will have a PhD or doctorate in an appropriate subject and will have demonstrated a particular capacity for independent academic research, typically by having obtained an advanced, post-doctoral research degree (Habilitation), or by having successfully completed the interim evaluation of a junior professorship, or by having obtained an equivalent qualification. Positive selection criteria include proof of research management capabilities in the field of cell biology or systems physiology, an international profile and high-quality publications in these same areas, a proven track record in acquiring external research funding, high-quality teaching as documented for example by teaching appraisals, experience in team management and in academic administration of a university.
