Trainee Biomedical Scientist - Haematology/Blood Transfusion DVH

Trainee Biomedical Scientist in Haematology and Blood Transfusion at Darent Valley Hospital Annex 21 until HCPC registered (75% of band 5)

Please note, this post is ONLY open to employees of the Kent and Medway Pathology Network.

This is a permanent role, with the successful applicant based at Darent Valley Hospital, with rotation to Medway Maritime Hospital as required.

IBMS Accredited Degree required for the Registration Portfolio.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified individuals for the post of Trainee Biomedical Scientist.

For the Band 5 post you must provide

  • Willingness to participate in the out of hour's service
  • Evidence of CPD

We are looking for well-motivated individuals, with experience of working in a NHS pathology laboratory (or equivalent) to join our Haematology and Blood Transfusion Department based at Darent Valley Hospital, Dartford.

In partnership with Beckman Coulter UK (BCUK) our pathology laboratory houses a range of equipment including: Beckman Coulter DxH 900 Analysers and Slidemaker/Stainer (SMS), IL(Werfen) TOP 700 and TOP 550 coagulation analysers, Biorad Variant II for Haemoglobinopathy screening and Ortho Vision blood grouping analysers.

This position will not be supported for visa sponsorship. All applicants are expected to have valid right to work document to work in the UK when applying for this position.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be supported to complete the IBMS registration portfolio.

Successful applicants will be expected to participate in an ongoing quality programme to maintain compliance with the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and United Kingdom Accreditation Standards (UKAS).

This post will require full participation in a 24/7 shift working pattern and will receive enhanced pay in line with Agenda for Change unsocial hours payments for maintaining round the clock services when qualified.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Perform tests and assays on all samples as necessary, according to established protocols and required standards, using intermediate theoretical knowledge, and organising own work.
  • Ensure that documentation is maintained to the Trust standard (including electronic records).
  • Prioritise samples for processing and results for issuing.
  • Maintain good housekeeping and be able to carry out basic analyser troubleshooting.
  • Validate and release clinical results.
  • Follow all protocols regarding the escalation of abnormal results.
  • Liaise with NHSBT as required.
  • Perform equipment maintenance (subject to competency).
  • Participate in audits.
  • Accurately maintain records e.g. quality audit reports and performance reports.

Person Specification Education and Training
  • Evidence of CPD.
Experience
  • Basic understanding of Haematology & Blood Transfusion in a Pathology laboratory (or equivalent).
Knowledge and Skills
  • Ability to solve problems.
  • Methodical and able to organise own workload.
  • Ability to produce results within set deadlines.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
