Job Description
Trading Standards Officer

Job Ref: Beeline 8945-1
Pay Rate: £60 per hour PAYE
Hours per week: 35 Monday - Friday, normal working hours
This opening assignment is for: 3 months
Location: Ealing, W5 2HL
Working pattern: Hybrid
Driving licence required.
Company car provided.
Candidate required to undertake Basic DBS if successful.

Summary of what the candidate must have to apply
  • Experience in Trading Standards enforcement across inspections, investigations and casework
  • Ability to assess complaints, prioritise workload and meet performance targets
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Confident preparing evidence, reports and legal case files
  • Ability to work flexibly, including occasional early mornings or late evenings
  • Trading Standards qualifications depending on grade:
    • Grade 10: Working towards TSPC
    • Grade 11: TSPC or equivalent, with proven enforcement experience
    • Grade 12: TSPD/TSAP/DTS/DCATS or equivalent, plus substantial complex investigation experience
The role
  • Carry out statutory and non-statutory Trading Standards functions
  • Support businesses with legal compliance through advice and interventions
  • Investigate complaints involving rogue traders, fraud, unsafe goods and unfair practices
  • Lead or support proactive enforcement initiatives to protect consumers and businesses
  • Work with external partners including Police, HMRC, Fire Brigade and other agencies
Key accountabilities
  • Respond to service requests and provide accurate advice
  • Conduct inspections, visits and interventions to meet team targets
  • Maintain clear, accurate records of inspections and investigations
  • Prepare case files for prosecution and act as a witness where required
  • Lead projects (Grades ) and supervise junior officers (Grade 12)
  • Ensure compliance with legislation, policies and professional standards
  • Handle evidential material securely, including high value seized goods
Requirements/key criteria
  • Ability to manage workload with minimal supervision
  • Skilled in collecting evidence and keeping contemporaneous notes
  • Comfortable working in potentially hazardous environments
  • Strong IT capability and ability to draft reports, letters and legal documents
  • Ability to interpret legislation and apply enforcement powers appropriately
  • Experience managing complex investigations (Grade 12)
  • CPD compliance required at Grades 11 and 12
