To provide in-depth technical expertise in Sport and Exercise Science teaching laboratories and provide advice on the creation, set up and best operation of technical resources to aid the delivery of teaching and/or research objectives. In addition, the postholder will undertake a range of technical support for MVLS/School of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Health/Education Hub activities.
Main Duties and Responsibilities- Provide in-depth technical knowledge, support, solutions, and advice to academic and student service users within Sport and Exercise Science teaching laboratories and research projects to maximise the learning experience and to the delivery of research objectives.
- Contribute to the overall smooth and efficient running of the Sport and Exercise Science teaching laboratories to ensure an excellent experience for service users.
- Design, plan and organise technical activities to meet the needs of service users within agreed timescales.
- Develop, create and test equipment, systems, procedures, protocols, models and/or techniques. Prepare specialised experimental set ups as required.
- Diagnose faults and troubleshoot day to day problems carrying out appropriate maintenance as required.
- Advise, train and provide guidance to service users in the best application and operation of technical resources.
- In liaison with Technician in Charge, monitor technical standards, advise, implement and evaluate improvements to existing protocols as required.
- Where relevant, supervise staff including allocating work and monitoring progress and outputs.
- Collect, analyse and interpret data using standard procedures and ensure that accurate records are kept and databases are updated accordingly. Present findings accurately, including teaching and/or research related data.
- In consultation with the Technician in Charge, support the completion of risk assessments and ensure the safe and efficient functioning of the Sport and Exercise Science teaching facilities, implementing health and safety policies as determined by the University.
- Purchase consumables and supplies within defined budget to maintain appropriate stock levels.
- Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team meetings/discussions and contribute to the wider MVLS/School of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Health/Education Hub activities as required, including the Technician Commitment key themes,
A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 7 Advanced Higher / Scottish vocational Qualification level 3, Higher National Certificate or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role, within Sport and Exercise Science.
Skills- C1 Demonstrable in-depth technical knowledge and skills aligned to Sport and Exercise Science.
- C2 Significant IT skills, including proficient user of relevant specialist and standard software packages.
- C3 Well developed analytical and problem solving capability, including high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- C4 Proven interpersonal and communication skills.
- C5 Excellent teamworking skills and where relevant to the post, supervisory skills.
- C6 Ability to plan and prioritise workload to meet competing demands.
- E1 Significant relevant work experience within a similar environment, including evidence of previous professional development.
- E2 Experience of understanding and interpreting the technical requirements of service users and implementing appropriate methods of achieving their needs.
- E3 Experience of planning and organising own workload to meet the needs of service users.
- E4 Understanding of relevant health and safety policies and procedures relative to the role in Sport and Exercise Science, and standards required.
Salary will be Grade 5, £28,031 - £31,236 per annum. This post is full time and open ended. Closing date: 23:45 on Wednesday 29th July 2026.
