Teaching Laboratory Technician

Overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic Teaching Laboratory Technician to join our dynamic team in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy. As part of the teaching laboratory team, you will play a pivotal role in setting up and maintaining equipment for teaching, preparing materials and samples, demonstrating and training new staff and students in the use of experimental equipment and in laboratory safety procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage laboratory resources, including equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain a safe and compliant laboratory environment by implementing laboratory safety protocols and carrying out risk assessments, ensuring compliance with all relevant safety regulations and certifications.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Provide technical advice and training to lab users (including students) on a range of experiments and techniques, such as metallography, mechanical testing, microscopy and basic workshop skills.
  • Collect and analyse data and provide troubleshooting advice, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of experimental results.
  • Oversee the maintenance, calibration, and repair of laboratory equipment.
  • Work in a busy environment while maintaining high levels of technical support.
  • Communicate effectively with academics, students, and other department members.
  • Be highly organised, methodical and thorough in approach.
Qualifications

Previous experience of working in a laboratory setting in Materials Science, other Physical Sciences, or Engineering is an advantage. Candidates interested in broadening their skills with a willingness to learn new skills are encouraged to apply.

Working Hours & Availability

We support applications from those who wish to work flexibly; patterns can be discussed at interview, however this will be restricted during term time. Postholders may need to work on bank holidays during term time.
