SEND Specialist Teaching Assistant - Sheffield

We are seeking a patient, compassionate, and confident Specialist Teaching Assistant to join a forward-thinking and inclusive special school in Sheffield, supporting neurodiverse young people aged 11-19.

This school is built around a strong sense of community, providing a safe, nurturing, and inspiring environment where every student feels valued, heard, and empowered to succeed-academically, socially, and emotionally.

About the Role

As a Specialist Teaching Assistant, you will support pupils with a range of communication, interaction, social, emotional, and mental health needs. You'll play a key role in helping students access a personalised curriculum designed to develop confidence, resilience, and essential life skills.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting pupils to engage with a broad, personalised curriculum
  • Adapting approaches to suit individual learning styles and needs
  • Promoting positive communication, interaction, and relationships
  • Working collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and specialist staff
  • Supporting structured routines, sensory activities, and social development
  • Assisting with personal care and mobility support where required
  • Encouraging independence, wellbeing, and life skills
  • Creating a calm, respectful, and inclusive learning environment
  • Building strong, trusting relationships with pupils and their families
Who We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who is truly passionate about working in a specialist setting and understands the importance of consistency, empathy, and patience.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience supporting pupils with autism, communication needs, and associated behaviours
  • Confidence managing challenging behaviour with calmness and compassion
  • A nurturing, proactive, and resilient approach
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative school team
  • A clear understanding of safeguarding and professional boundaries
  • Up-to-date Moving & Handling training
