Surfing England Trainer Assessor - 'Surf Coach: Progression' Award Job Specification

Surfing England is developing a dynamic, forward thinking organisation driven by the needs of the surf community. Co creating a new coaching framework in 2021, the entity launched the Surf Instructor: Recreation award and now seeks a Trainer Assessor to deliver the upcoming Surf Coach: Progression award.

Context - Coaching Vision and the Surf Instructor Recreation Award

The Surf Instructor: Recreation award was introduced to provide a broader, higher standard entry level qualification equivalent to the ISA level 1. It enables certified teachers to lead beginner lessons safely and has gained international recognition.

The Surfing England Core Instructor / Coach Awards

Three core awards form the backbone of the new programme:

  • Surf Instructor: Recreation
  • Surf Coach: Progression
  • Surf Coach: Performance
New Surf Coach Progression Award Launch - Autumn 2025

The new award is an in person, three phase course delivered exclusively by Surfing England Trainer Assessors. It is aimed at coaches who have completed a level 1 course such as ISA 1, ASI 1 or the Surfing England Surf Instructor: Recreation award and who have also finished the safeguarding course.

Role and Responsibilities

As a Trainer Assessor you will:

  • Ensure candidates achieve the required competencies for certification.
  • Deliver classroom theory, mentoring and assessment for each award phase.
  • Maintain an appropriate classroom setup with high quality ICT and a venue for in water practice.
  • Run regular intermediate out back lessons to provide practical experience for trainees.
  • Assess candidates against the award framework, including lesson planning, beach safety, NOPs, EAPs and safeguarding.
  • Provide clear feedback, action plans and administrative completion for each candidate.
Essential Experience and Attributes
  • Deep understanding of surf coaching at beginner and intermediate levels with several seasons of experience.
  • Passion for developing people and ability to adapt teaching styles to diverse trainees.
  • Experience delivering engaging theory courses to varied groups.
  • Strong organisational skills and timely completion of administrative tasks.
  • Desire to act as an ambassador for Surfing England and the sport of surfing.
Desirable Experience and Attributes
  • Coaching or teaching experience in other sports or sectors.
  • Higher level surf coaching qualifications and experience.
  • Head coach or surf school manager experience.
  • Experience across multiple settings.
  • Experience delivering classroom theory, mentoring and rigorous practical assessment.
  • Existing Surfing England Trainer Assessor for the instructor recreation award.
Operating Model

The course is priced at £375 per participant. Trainers receive £150 per course, with the remainder covering Surfing England costs and reinvested into coach development. A proportion of the revenue also supports the organization's operating expenses.
