Our Intensive Care Unit at Yeovil District Hospital is welcoming compassionate nurses who want to build their critical care experience and provide highquality care to our sickest patients. We offer fulltime and parttime hours, with an expectation to work flexibly across a rota that includes nights and weekends. In return, you'll have access to strong mentorship, ongoing training, and opportunities to progress within our integrated trust.

We're looking for nurses who bring good communication skills, a collaborative approach, and a passion for delivering safe, person centred care.

Main duties of the job

To provide and maintain a high standard of evidence based, patient centred care. To demonstrate good interpersonal skills and to develop practical skills required within the speciality, whist reflecting the philosophy of care.

To deliver patient care on a daily basis, using the systems in place in the department for a multi disciplinary approach to patient centred care delivery, which builds on the philosophy of greater involvement of patients and their relatives, carers by using the Trusts patient and public involvement strategy.

Experienced Band 5 post holders will also provide effective clinical and managerial leadership of the department, in the absence of the senior members of the team, which empowers staff to deliver patient centred, evidence based nursing care

Under the direction of the senior staff nurse and or sister/charge nurse you will co-ordinate and deliver safe, effective, high quality nursing care for patients level 1 to 3 within the ICU.This will include assessing the needs, planning, initiating, implementing and evaluating the care for these patients

You will work collaboratively with the whole multi disciplinary team

You will use and maintain specialist critical care equipment

You will provide evidence of your training and ongoing learning including revalidation requirements

Job responsibilities

Demonstrate a collaborative approach to care through effective communication and decision making between the MDT, patients and significant others.

Adhere to trust policies, including uniform and reporting absence.

With support for the direction, planning and organising of the care for their patients ensuring that their needs are met in a timely an efficient manner.

Providing and delivering high standard of nursing care by initiating and co ordinating the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of individual patient needs based on evidence.This includes all aspects of care from admission through to discharge.

Developing key skills in management of the critically ill patient to include, setting up of complex equipment including ventilators , monitoring systems, haemofiltration, infusion pumps and cardiac output monitoring devices.

Developing skills in interpretation and manipulation of complex clinical data, facilitating early medical intervention to minimise the risk of complications and optimise patient clinical condition

Advanced forms of respiratory support

Advanced forms of invasive monitoring

Visual monitoring and analysis

Advanced forms of Renal support

Nutritional support

Safe calculation, administration and titration of multiple complex IV infusions working within prescribed parameters to achieve precise aims, including a working knowledge of the drug effects and action in the event of an adverse response, on a frequent basis

Advanced life support skills

Recognise and assess emergencies within ICU, HDU and take immediate appropriate action.

Observation and safe management of intravascular devices, on a frequent basis

Observation and safe management of airway devices, delivering assisted or mechanical ventilation on a frequent basis

Engage and interact with patients, carers and family encouraging them to be actively involved in patient s care planning.

Co ordinate and conduct safe timely complex transfers for investigations such as CT or MRI scans.

Provide advice and support to relatives in unpredictable and sometimes highly difficult situations whilst respecting their cultural and spiritual values.

Understands and complies with the ordering, storing, checking and administration of drugs in accordance with Trust policy and NMC standards

Responsible for infection control and cleanliness standards on a shift by shift basis by ensuring their self and other members of the team adhere to good practice and follow unit, trust and national guidelines.

Initiates the reporting of any untoward accident such as complaints, clinical emergencies or injuries, drug administration errors or equipment failures.

Actively seek to reduce risk and contribute to the management of risk which will include the completion of risk assessments and subsequent action plans taking any immediate first line actions required.

Ensure a welcoming, caring and safe environment is provided for the patient and their family, visitors and carers.

Experience
  • A minimum of 6 months experience working in an acute or critical care setting.
