Willow Ward is a 10-bed mixed sex, older peoples functional ward, providing inpatient assessment and treatment for service users experiencing an acute episode of their mental illness and or disorder.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, and highly motivated staff nurse to join our dynamic, forward thinking nursing team within Willow Ward at Kendray Hospital.
We provide high quality care, which focuses on helping individuals recover in a way that is meaningful to them. The service provides a safe, supportive and therapeutic environment which promotes the physical, emotional and mental wellbeing of all service users during an episode of mental illness.
We are looking for a confident and dynamic staff nurse. One who is recovery focused, pro active and passionate. The successful candidate will be able to actively participate in delivering high-quality, person centred interventions for our service users who have a variety of complex needs. They will also possess excellent communication skills. The right candidate will also be able to accept responsibility, work autonomously and be an active and effective team worker.
You will work under the supervision and guidance of the wider multidisciplinary team, supporting them in the assessment, treatment and recovery of those who use our service. You will help to empower, improve wellbeing and support service users in their recovery pathway and help them prepare for a timely discharge.
Main duties of the jobThe successful candidate will be required to work autonomously and as part of the MDT, demonstrating sound clinical decision making with a passion for working in an acute inpatient setting.
As a Staff Nurse on a busy inpatient unit, you will support the MDT in the provision of high quality care for adults with a wide range of mental health problems. You will be confident, have good people skills and be able to challenge tactfully and constructively and gain the respect and confidence of nursing, medical and MDT staff. You will have ample opportunity to build your skills and develop.
The successful candidate will be expected to work a 24 hour shift system so care is provided across the day and night. You will also be supported to gain invaluable experience and grow in confidence.
- To contribute to an integrated team of staff in providing a high quality of care and treatment both on an individual basis and with a purposeful group programme within a core facility.
- To have an understanding of and a commitment to the philosophy of mental health or learning disability services and the local service provision.
- To be responsible and accountable for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of treatment and care for defined service users within the pathway.
- To utilise core nursing / specialist skills within the role of primary nurse.
- To contribute specific professional support and advice to the team, service users and carers.
- To work in partnership with other teams within and outside of the organisation.
- To oversee and support junior members of staff in implementing planned treatment and care.
- To support the Management Team in carrying out their duties.
- To act flexibly to cover shifts to provide a 365 day per year service.
- To act as shift co ordinator when required and participate in the planning and coordinating of the shift to ensure smooth and effective running of the service and role model best practice.
- To coordinate and lead the team to make effective use of team skills to provide the best possible standards of care and treatment/interventions.
- To prioritise workload in keeping with the team and service objectives.
- To take full involvement as a primary nurse by assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating treatment / care for named service users.
- To actively participate and contribute to service users reviews, ward rounds, meetings as applicable.
- To provide care and specific interventions for other service users as allocated on a daily basis, and directly in accordance with their written care plan.
- To maintain accurate and up to date care plans for each service user.
- To maintain effective use of systems for service user and carer documentation.
- To contribute to keeping statistical service records, be involved in the evaluation process as required by the manager.
- To develop good working relationships with consultants, their teams and other trust teams and services to ensure effective service delivery and best use of resources.
- To develop positive relationships with non statutory and voluntary agencies to develop working partnerships as appropriate to the service development and local delivery.
- To positively embrace service user / carer involvement in all aspects of service delivery wherever and whenever possible.
- To inform all service users of their right to access their care plan, and to actively encourage them to read, write / evaluate their care plan.
- To work within the boundaries of accountability and confidentiality.
- To know, maintain and constantly strive to improve all standards of care and procedures (written and implicit) within the team.
- To ensure that high standards of care are maintained by self and peers.
- To provide direction, guidance and support to junior staff.
- To participate in and provide clinical supervision.
- To participate in and provide managerial supervision.
- To participate in and implement (under supervision) Personal Development Planning.
- To participate and be actively involved in team reflective forums / sessions.
- To be involved in the induction programme for all new starters.
- To be involved in the off duty planning and day to day cover of the service.
- To manage individual / team time and resource effectively.
- To show appropriate regard for budgetary constraints within the service.
- To participate in the selection and recruitment of junior staff when appropriate.
- To make comprehensive risk assessments and implement management plans.
- To identify training needs and contribute to the education and development of all staff and students.

- To contribute specific professional support and advice to the team, service users and maintain an up to date awareness of current thinking in mental health, health and nursing research, and apply this in practice.
- To administer medication within the NMC and Trust guidelines.
- To be involved in the smooth running of medication / clinic room issues including ordering medication and supplies and ensuring policies and protocols are in place and adhered to.
- To educate and train the team with issues relating to medication.
- To educate and train the team in monitoring service users physical observations including blood pressure, pulse, respirations, BMI, weight etc.
- To liaise with local pharmacy to develop good working relationship.
- To provide supervision and support for workers as appropriate.
- To act as mentor for nursing students.
- To liaise with link tutor at university and ensure the nursing team have the relevant training to mentor students.
- To be responsible for health and safety; informing line manager of issues, using equipment safely, reporting defects, carrying out risk assessments, and ensuring compliance with safe work practices.
