Ward 6 is an acute surgical ward with specialities such as colorectal, upper gastrointestinal and maxillofacial surgery.
The template of our ward consists of 20 surgical ward beds, the surgical assessment unit and surgical SDEC. These are offered as a rotation on ward 6 to enhance distinctive assessment skills and experience.
We look after a broad range of post operative patients. This will give you a great opportunity to widen your knowledge in managing post operative patients. Our ward is fast paced, led by a dynamic multidisciplinary team which consists of various speciality consultants and specialist nurses.
The surgical SDEC is an outpatient appointment clinic currently based on ward 6. The clinic runs Monday to Friday 9-5. They take referrals from the GP for ambulatory patients who require a surgical review.
The surgical assessment unit has 4 trolleys. This takes referrals from ED or the GP for a surgical assessment of patients that are too unwell to be reviewed in SDEC.
Main duties of the jobTake personal responsibility and accountability for ensuring that the trust and local policies and procedures are known and followed, and ensure duties are carried out accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct.
Provide high quality evidence-based practice, delivering specialist surgical care whilst working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team - stoma nurses, pain team, tissue viability nurse, critical care outreach.
Take responsibility for the supervision and guidance of other staff including health care support workers and students on a daily basis. You will actively contribute to the provision of a good learning environment by taking the role of mentor/assessor.
Provide post operative care - including routine monitoring and observations, as well as managing post operative complications, wound care and assessment, pain management - including pain devices such as PCA, ESP, rectal sheaths and epidurals. Managing surgical drains.
Provide nutritional support by delivering supplements via parenteral nutrition via lines such as central lines, PICC lines, midlines, alongside occasional NG/NJ feeding.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

On ward 6 we offer a training package to support and guide you throughout your new nursing adventure. This training package has been developed by the multi-disciplinary team who have used their experience and skill to identify key training needs required for our ward as a new starter joining our surgical team.
Person Specification Knowledge- Ability to demonstrate responsibilities under NMC Code of Conduct.
- Welsh Language Skills (Level 3 and above/B2) are Desirable for this Role.
- Active UK NMC registration
- Experience working in a UK NHS hospital
- Experience working within an acute surgical ward/department
