Job Description
Job overview The Respiratory Team within Whiston Hospital is looking for Band 5 registered nurses to deliver high quality care for the respiratory patient.

Our units are both acute and fast paced environment. No two days are the same and staff are continuously facing new challenges and experiences that help them grow and develop within their role.

The Respiratory Service consists of 3 Respiratory wards, 2B/ 2C and 2D

If you join our team, you will have the opportunity to gain experience in acute respiratory nursing. We provide a holistic care to the very acutely unwell and those with chronic respiratory illnesses who require frequent treatment. The wards treat a wide range of thoracic conditions. We care for patients with a variety of conditions, including lung cancer, asthma, COPD, TB, type 1 and type 2 respiratory failure, pleural effusions, pneumothorax, Tracheostomies and PE's. Within 2C you will also have the opportunity to develop your skills in NIV (non-invasive ventilation).

The ward team has excellent support from the Consultant Respiratory physicians. We have strong relationships with our allied health professionals to provide excellent, safe care. Respiratory has a close working relationship with the Respiratory Nurse Specialists and palliative specialist nurses, to deliver high quality patient care.

Main duties of the job Our aim is to provide a high-quality service whilst making our patients feel empowered and included in their care, to ensure we achieve the best in everything we do.

Preceptorship - New starters attend a Trust Induction, where they learn about the Trust, start developing their mandatory skills and begin to understand what will be expected of them in their new role. Staff will then progress onto Preceptorship, an excellent programme designed to facilitate efficient development of competence, confidence and expertise. Support will be given at a clinical level by a preceptor, and from a wider organizational structure including the preceptorship lead, clinical skills team, clinical practice development nurse and learning and development.

The Respiratory Directorate is an excellent environment for experienced nurses also. They may not have previous experience within respiratory, but they would be able to bring other knowledge and skills from other specialties. As described above, the same opportunities are available to experienced nurses. Nurses who may have previous experience within respiratory would have the opportunity to consolidate their knowledge and skills. They would be able to gain experience and develop within certain aspects of respiratory care that may not have been available to them in their previous role. This includes caring for patients in our high dependent units, where our patients may require non-invasive ventilation therapy.

Acute Care

Providing emergency and maternity services at Whiston, Southport and Ormskirk hospitals, and medical and surgical specialties across all our sites.

Providing primary care services at Marshalls Cross Medical Centre situated in St Helens Hospital.

Community Services

Providing adult community services for St Helens and a wheelchair service in Chorley, South Ribble, and West Lancashire. Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital is where patients needing acute hospital beds can continue rehabilitation. We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.

Specialist Regional Services

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Qualifications
  • 1st Level Registered Nurse (degree/diploma)
  • Current NMC Registration
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
Knowledge and Experience
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge of NMC professional standards for practice contained within the code
  • Experience of working in a clinical environment
  • Understand requirements for NMC professional Revalidation
  • Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team
  • An understanding of national, regional and local NHS issues
  • Experience of providing and receiving complex, sensitive information
