Job Description
Specialty Doctor in Vascular

The closing date is 01 April 2026

This post will suit candidates planning to gain useful Resident/SAS level experience in Vascular surgery. It offers a chance to improve clinical and surgical skills during and after hours, preparing them for FRCS exit examinations or a CESR pathway. The department supports clinical research with a strong record of international presentations and publications.

Main duties of the job
  • Support during ward rounds and share responsibility of ward patients
  • Patient assessment
  • Assessment of patients attending routine general clinics
  • In-patient and day case theatre lists
  • Perform flexible cystoscopies and procedures such as TRUS procedures/template biopsies
  • Attend MDT meetings
  • Support clinicians in operating environments
  • Provide cover during periods of holiday, study or sick leave
  • Liaise with patients and families to discuss progress, goals and achievable outcomes
  • Coordinate discharges with multidisciplinary teams (MDTs)
  • Be on call as part of the surgical on call rota

Person Specification Qaulifications
  • MBChB/MBBS or equivalent
  • Completed at least four years' full time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained part time or flexibly) with at least two years in a specialty training programme or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty, or equivalent experience and competencies
  • Must have or be eligible for full registration with the General Medical Council at the time of appointment and continue to hold a License to Practice
Experience and Achievements
  • Demonstrate clinical experience and competence in all aspects of Vascular Surgery
  • Apply sound clinical knowledge relevant to the role
  • Make clinical decisions and manage risk, seeking help when appropriate and prioritising clinical needs
  • Understand current issues within Vascular and the future direction of the specialty
  • Understand current issues within the wider NHS
Teaching and training
  • Experience and enthusiasm for teaching postgraduate doctors and other healthcare professionals
  • Academic achievements and evidence of familiarity with research methods leading to publications
Audit and Research
  • Knowledge of audit principles and evidence of participation in and completion of audit projects, including implementation of outcomes
  • Critical appraisal skills
  • Evidence of knowledge of research methodology
  • Good communication and empathy skills with patients
  • Willingness to work in a multidisciplinary team to provide integrated care
  • Teamwork through communication and sharing workload
  • Ability to manage high pressure situations such as clinical crises
