Job Description
Specialty Doctor - Old Age Psychiatry - Memory and CIIT Team

We are excited to announce an opportunity to join the Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS trust as Specialty Doctor in Old Age Psychiatry. The role is to support two clinical areas of Memory Service and Complex Intervention and Treatment Team (CITT) in Swindon. This is a community role where the post holder will be based in Victoria Centre in Swindon with the majority of clinical activities at Victoria Centre with some travelling involved for domiciliary visits. The post is supported by Specialty doctors in the two clinical areas and support from an Old Age Consultant Psychiatrist . The Trust is committed to supporting those Specialty doctors who aspire to obtain consultant status in psychiatry via the Portfolio Pathway route.

Main duties of the job

To participate in the CITT and memory assessment service i.e. history taking, diagnosis, note keeping, report and letter writing, psychiatric and physical examination, pharmacological treatment and discharge planning. To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team that makes early diagnosis of cognitive problems and uses meaningful occupation as a strategy for recovery To deliver quality pharmacological treatment in accordance with NICE guidance. To participate in CPA meetings when appropriate. To be aware of current research and discuss participation in research programmes with patients. To help in the development of memory services in Swindon and across AWP. To liaise with other parts of the service (especially the Primary Care Liaison Service, and CITT when urgent assessments are needed) and GPs and non NHS organisations wherever applicable. To participate in the AWP memory assessment service group. Write up all their notes using the Trusts Electronic Record system RIO which also records time and date of entry. The post holder is personally responsible for entering their notes onto the system themselves. Ensure effective and timely documentation and communication of clinical decision making and management plans The post holder is expected to seek Section 12 approval, but this is not a requirement of the post. To support the CITT MDT with timely assessment of older adults in the community and clear documentation of assessments in the community.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Basic Medical Qualification (MBBS or equivalent)
  • Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
  • Section 12 Approval
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practice, or eligible for full registration with the GMC at the time of confirmaiton of appointment
  • Completed at least four years' full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in Psychiatry or as a fixed term specialty trainee in Psychiatry; or shall have equivalent experience and competencies.
Skills
  • Ability to manage own time and workload and prioritise clinical work
  • Ability to appraise own performance
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Evidence of specific achievements that demonstrate leadership skills
Research and Audit
  • Ability to critically appraise published research.
  • Experience of carrying out an audit project
  • Experience in involvement in a research project and publication.
  • Interest in research
Knowledge
  • Up to date knowledge of issues in Mental Health Service for this specialty.
Teaching
  • Commitment to teaching other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Teaching of undergraduate students
  • PGCME or equivalent/aspiration to attain a postgraduate teaching qualification
