Job Description

The Royal Aeronautical Society is a professional body dedicated to aerospace, aviation, and space communities. They exist to further the advancement of aeronautical art, science, and engineering around the world.

The Research Department at the Royal Aeronautical Society is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the Society's reputation for independent, evidence led and accurate research. This is achieved through drawing on the expertise of our Specialist Groups, and wider membership, both in supporting the Specialist Groups to publish research and through directly authored output.

The role of the postholder will be to support the Specialist Groups in facilitating their activities, particularly through setting up meetings, handling volunteer IT access and communications such as emails, social media and webpages on behalf of the groups. The role will also require managing incoming enquiries and ensuring up to date records are held by the Society. In some cases, the role will require supporting the production of technical opinion and position papers, in consultation with Specialist Groups and Corporate Partners.

Primary responsibilities will include: Specialist Groups and Research
  • Manage all incoming enquiries regarding Specialist Groups.
  • Act as Committee manager to the Specialist Groups Coordination Committee to provide administration support and guidance for meeting preparation and co ordinating staff participation as appropriate for agenda items. Assist with the administration, attend and support the biannual Specialist Group Forums and any other ad hoc events arranged as necessary.
  • Support the Specialist Group Committees in meeting preparation and coordinate staff participation as appropriate for agenda items.
  • Assist the Specialist Group committees with communication (e.g. email campaigns), recruitment of new volunteers and other Specialist Group activities such as the running of competitions or sales of books.
  • Support the Community of Interest model for participation and engagement in Specialist Groups.
  • Support the administration and delivery of Specialist Group GDPR compliance.
  • Engage with Specialist Groups to facilitate the production of technical papers.
  • Support the development of member surveys and collate the output into reports for the benefit of the membership and wider sector.
General Duties
  • Maintain high standard of personal presentation and represent the Society in a professional manner at all times.
  • Liaise with other members of the Society to actively promote opportunities, exchange information and increase professionalism.
  • Undertake all responsibilities with reference to Society procedures.
  • Undertake any reasonable duties as requested by Line Manager and Senior Management Team.
  • Maintain and enhance knowledge and skills through appropriate CPD.

Note - This job description is not exhaustive and will be subject to periodic review. It may be amended to meet the changing needs of the Society. The post holder will be expected to participate in this process and we would aim to reach agreement on any changes.

Required skills:

Qualifications

  • Educated to Level 3 at the minimum or equivalent and have equivalent professional experience/training in a relevant field as detailed below.
  • Degree in engineering or relevant science subject
  • IT skills essential Competence in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word essential.
  • Ability to prioritise workload, multi task and complete tasks to deadlines and to a specified standard.
  • Ability to work well independently and to contribute as part of a team, with a supportive and positive attitude to colleagues.
  • Excellent written and verbal English language skills.
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines with good personal organisation and time management skills
  • Ability to build and develop relationships with key stakeholders
  • Preexisting network of contacts within the aerospace, aviation and/or space sectors.

Experience

  • Working and communicating with external stakeholders, at various levels.
  • Experience of writing for a variety of mediums.
  • Knowledge of a professional body or association
  • Experience of Dot Digital or other email marketing systems.
  • Experience of using CRM systems.

Department/Location: Research / London
Reports to: Head of Research
Hours of work: Part time, 17.5 hours/week.

Hybrid with regular London Office presence.

6 month fixed term contract
