As an apprentice, you will be involved in delivering the software infrastructure of our National Timing Centre , developing new Time and Frequency infrastructure within the UK. You will learn from industry experts through a combination of practical experience, guidance, and theory.
As a Software Engineer Apprentice, you will collaborate with our Software Engineering team to support application development and deliver high-quality software. The program includes work-based training, off-the-job training, and development activities.
Our Software Engineer Apprentices study the Level 4 Software Developer Apprenticeship over two years.
Additional training may include online learning or tasks assigned by NPL supervisors. We aim to build your confidence and skills from day one, including communication, time management, teamwork, self-awareness, and confidence.
Your daily tasks will include:
- Attending training sessions to enhance your technical skills.
- Working on software projects within the Science Group.
- Participating in team meetings, brainstorming, and project discussions.
- Engaging in NPL STEM Outreach activities.
- Ensuring software quality through best practices, testing, change management, and cybersecurity.
- Maintaining documentation for supported applications to aid knowledge transfer and team resilience.

- If selected, attend an assessment centre at our Teddington site in Summer 2025.

You should demonstrate:
- Level 3 ICT qualification, A Level in ICT/STEM, BTEC in IT, or 1+ year work experience in IT.
- Practical ability and enthusiasm for understanding how things work.
- Professional approach, adaptability, strong communication, teamwork, attention to detail, resilience, and good time management.
- Residency near Teddington or willingness to relocate (role is on-site 5 days a week).
