Overview

The Senior EHS Leader will design, implement and oversee Environmental, Health & Safety strategy for a major heavy engineering manufacturing site undergoing extensive expansion. The role spans multiple sites - Rugby, Loughborough, Newcastle Upon Tyne and Nether Alderley - and requires driving proactive safety culture, risk management, and regulatory compliance across construction, commissioning and operations.

Responsibilities
  • Strategic EHS Leadership
Develop and deliver a long term EHS strategy that aligns with corporate objectives, UK/EU regulations and future growth. Advise senior leadership on EHS matters related to large scale CAPEX projects, manufacturing risks and environmental impact. Lead EHS input into the steam turbine factory extension programme, embedding risk controls in project design, contractor management and commissioning.
  • Construction & Expansion Support
Serve as the principal EHS authority for the extension project, ensuring full compliance with CDM regulations. Conduct design stage EHS reviews and drive the implementation of safe systems of work, construction phase plans and environmental controls throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Site Security Leadership
Own the strategy and daily governance for site security during normal operations and the high risk construction period. Implement security risk assessments, manage access control systems, perimeter protection, CCTV and intruder detection, and develop emergency preparedness plans for fire, breaches, evacuation, terrorism and business continuity.
  • Operational EHS Management
Establish robust risk assessment, PUWER compliance, safe operating procedures and machinery safeguarding. Create and monitor EHS KPIs, driving continuous improvement in line with ISO45001 and ISO14001 standards.
  • Environmental Lead
Create and execute an environmental strategy covering emissions, waste management, water sustainability and compliance with EA permits. Lead initiatives to improve energy efficiency, support net zero and decarbonisation goals, and maintain rigorous environmental risk assessments, monitoring and reporting.
  • Culture, Training & Stakeholder Engagement
Champion a safety ownership culture through leadership visibility, communication and coaching. Lead EHS training and competency programmes, partner with HR and external regulators, and represent the site during audits, inspections and corporate forums.
  • Incident Management & Compliance Assurance
Conduct incident investigations using root cause methodologies, drive corrective actions and ensure statutory inspections, audits, risk assessments and H&S committee meetings are completed on schedule. Maintain compliance with UK legislation including the Health and Safety at Work Act, COSHH, LOLER, PUWER, RIDDOR and CDM.
Qualifications
  • Chartered status with NEBOSH or degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Extensive EHS leadership experience in heavy manufacturing, engineering or industrial operations.
  • Proven ability to support large scale CAPEX construction or factory expansion projects.
  • Deep knowledge of UK EHS legislation (CDM, environmental permitting) and strong risk management skills.
  • Leadership presence with influence across all levels, strategic planning capability and operational control.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, data driven mindset and continuous improvement orientation.
  • Resilience, decisiveness and the ability to coach, motivate and develop teams.
  • Desirable: experience in power generation, rotating machinery or turbine related manufacturing; lean manufacturing, Six Sigma or operational excellence tools; additional qualifications in fire safety, environmental management or occupational hygiene.
Additional Requirements

The role requires holding or ability to obtain SC Level security clearance as a UK passport holder. Dual passport holders are acceptable if the second country is approved by the vetting authority.
