Sister/Charge Nurse

Swaledale Acute Frailty Unit (Frailty Admissions Unit) currently has 20 beds with plans underway to convert to utilise 2x frailty same day assessment beds.

As a band 6 on AFU, we expect you to be able to lead the shift and the team you are working with confidently and safely. Patient safety is at the heart of what we deliver here. Our patients are often acutely unwell and frail therefore requiring quick delivery of treatment and a team around them that can spot the signs of deterioration fast, alongside this the essentials of providing high quality care to ensure the safety of patients are maintained. The band 6 on AFU is key in collaborating well & building rapport with the MDT team and will attend daily meetings to ensure that each patients individual needs are being met and that a team approach is adopted to meet both medical and at times complex social needs are being met to support our patients.

good communication is vital within this role and building good relationships with other departments, colleagues, patients and relatives to maintain effective flow from the emergency department and transferring patients to other wards and ensuring safe and effective discharges.

This post is for 24 hours per week.

Main duties of the job

To support and work with senior nursing teams to provide support to junior colleague's, carrying out leadership tasks such as return to work interviews, sickness monitoring, new starter paperwork, shift management.

To take charge of the clinical area in the absence of the ward manager, dealing with & escalating any concerns with regards to staff or patient safety.

To take responsibility for the assessments of the care needs; the development, implementation and evaluation of care to ensure the highest possible standards of care are received by patients.

To supervise and teach other nursing and non-nursing staff, acting as an excellent clinical role model and team leader to ensure quality care is delivered to the patients.

Job responsibilities

The applicant should have the ability to work independently and within a team, with patient experience at the heart of their delivery of care . There should be evidence of self-development, along with the qualification to mentor students. When in charge the expectation is to lead, support and motivate your team to ensure high quality care is delivered. As a Sister/Charge Nurse you will need to line manage a team of health care professionals and deputize in the absence of the Ward Manager.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse on the appropriate part of the NMC Register
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • ENB 998 OR equivalent to be either completed or due to be completed.
  • Leadership course
  • Experience in change management
  • Prev band 6 experience
