Sister/Charge Nurse - Paediatric Emergency Department

Main duties of the job

What You'll Be Doing

  • Leading shifts and supporting your team like a pro.
  • Triage quickly and safely.
  • Providing care for everything from bruises to critical emergencies.
  • Mentoring junior staff and sharing your expertise.
  • Driving improvements and shaping the future of paediatric emergency care.
What We're Looking For
  • Registered Children's Nurse (RNC) with NMC registration.
  • Experience in paediatric emergency or acute care.
  • Leadership skills and a passion for teamwork.
  • Calm under pressure, great communicator, and ready to take charge.

Bonus Points If You Have

  • Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS).
  • Experience in audits or service improvement projects.

Job responsibilities
  • Provide leadership, coordination and support to team members on each shift.
  • Link with Ward 8 and PAU Coordinators to ensure patient flow is maintained.
  • Liaise with the multidisciplinary team regarding patient care.
  • Ensure all relevant referrals are completed (safeguarding, health visiting, mental health).
  • Act as an appraiser for team members, developing the future workforce.
  • Maintain standards and encourage continuous improvement.
Person Specification Qualifications & Education - Essential
  • Appropriate Child NMC Registration.
  • Significant experience in paediatric nursing.
  • National Mentorship qualification or willingness to work towards it within 18 months of commencement.
  • Evidence of continuing education or development.
  • Level 3 Safeguarding.
Qualifications & Education - Desirable
  • Degree.
  • APLS/EPALS or willingness to undertake.
  • Relevant courses/qualification.
  • Experience of using Manchester triage system.
Knowledge & Experience - Essential
  • Awareness of changes within nursing practice.
  • Knowledge of clinical governance and its relevance to practice.
  • Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures.
  • Experience of leading clinical shifts.
  • Evidence of clinical competence in your speciality or willingness to expand (e.g., venepuncture, cannulation).
Knowledge & Experience - Desirable
  • Knowledge of ethical issues.
  • Knowledge of leadership and management.
  • Research and development.
  • Understanding of CQC standards and processes.
  • Experience of managing critically unwell children.
