Job Description
Job Summary
The Workshop Manager is responsible for overseeing all operations within the HGV workshop, ensuring vehicles are serviced, maintained, and repaired efficiently, safely, and to the highest standards. The role involves managing a team of technicians, maintaining compliance with health and safety regulations, and ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction.
Saturday is a requirement as 1 of the 5 working days.
Responsibilities
Workshop Operations
Plan and allocate work to technicians based on workload, priorities, and skill sets.
Team Management
Lead, supervise, and support a team of HGV technicians and apprentices.
Conduct performance reviews, training, and development of staff.
Monitor productivity and efficiency of workshop staff.
Manage shift patterns and holiday cover to ensure continuous operations.
Compliance & Safety
Ensure full compliance with Health & Safety, environmental, and legal standards.
Maintain accurate service records and documentation for audits.
Implement and oversee safe working practices (e.g. LOLER, PUWER, COSHH).
Liaise with transport and compliance departments regarding vehicle availability and defects.
Customer & Internal Liaison
Communicate effectively with fleet managers, drivers, and third-party clients.
Provide progress updates on work, downtime, and estimates.
Resolve any complaints or issues promptly and professionally.
Stock & Budget Control
Oversee parts ordering, stock levels, and cost control.
Approve purchases and manage workshop budgets.
Work closely with procurement to ensure best value for parts and consumables.
Oversee diagnostics, repairs, servicing, and MOT preparation of HGVs.
Ensure all work is completed to DVSA and manufacturer standards.
Maintain equipment, tools, and workshop cleanliness and safety.
Requirements
Essential Qualifications & Skills:
Level 3 NVQ or equivalent in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance & Repair.
Proven experience in a supervisory or managerial role in an HGV environment.
Strong knowledge of vehicle diagnostics, repair procedures, and legislation (e.g. VOSA, DVSA).
Excellent communication and leadership skills.
IT proficiency (e.g. using workshop management software, Excel, email).
CPC or Transport Manager qualification (desirable).
Performance Indicators:
Workshop efficiency and productivity metrics.
MOT pass rates and first-time fixes.
Vehicle downtime and turnaround times.
Technician performance and development.
Compliance audit results (internal/external).
