Senior User Researcher

We're looking for a Senior User Researcher to join a government digital programme, leading research across the full life cycle from discovery through to live service.

Key responsibilities:

  • Plan and design user research programmes, testing both high-level concepts and specific aspects of services as they're designed and developed
  • Lead contextual and discovery-phase research to inform service design and strategic direction
  • Select and apply the most appropriate research methods across a range of user and customer research techniques
  • Conduct and oversee both quantitative and qualitative analysis of research data
  • Work across Discovery, Alpha, Beta, and Live phases, adapting and evolving research approach at each stage
  • Champion user-centred design practices and embed them into agile ways of working across the wider team
  • Mentor and provide guidance to less experienced researchers where required

Experience required:

  • Significant proven experience in user research, or substantial equivalent experience from another relevant research field
  • Strong demonstrable knowledge of a broad range of user/customer research methods, with sound judgement on which to apply and when
  • Extensive experience conducting discovery and contextual research
  • Advanced quantitative and qualitative analysis skills
  • Track record working across multiple phases of the GDS service standard (Discovery, Alpha, Beta, Live)
  • Proven experience embedding user-centred design into agile teams, ideally with some influence over team practice and standards
