Overview

West Midlands Ambulance Service University NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Senior Telecommunications Engineer to join our innovative NHSIT team supporting critical Telecommunications infrastructure. The role is based at our Headquarters in Brierley Hill. The closing date is 02 March 2026.

The Senior Telecommunication Engineer will support the Telecoms Manager and assist in the development of the Trust's telephone and mobile infrastructure to support critical operations and provide technical advisory support, including two Emergency Operations Centres and Patient Transport Service Contact Centres.

Applicants must hold an OEM-based technical qualification with a minimum of 4 years working in an IT environment and knowledge of Avaya Communication Manager and associated services (AES, Breeze, AMS, SM, SBC). You will be the escalation point for junior team members, assisting the team with incidents and service requests. There will be opportunities to be involved with project work including Voice Recorder upgrade, SIP migration, Inbound Services and other digital first solutions.

Job responsibilities
  • Design and apply procedures for security, recovery, restart (including disaster) and incident/problem control.
  • Manage upgrades, patching, operation, control, maintenance and effective use of non-critical voice and data applications.
  • Ensure integrity and confidentiality of information in line with policy.
  • Manage security and performance targets for fixed and mobile telephony hardware and software.
  • Communicate effectively with users and IT staff, including in emergencies and during maintenance or major amendments to services.
  • Investigate ways to improve service levels while minimising investment and implement improvements within scope of responsibility.
  • Participate in deployment and planning of service projects; may work alone or in a team with regard to budget constraints.
  • Implement training documentation and deliver training on IT, Telephony and Mobile equipment.
  • Plan transitions to revised arrangements during operational demands (e.g., Gold Control).
  • Supervise allocated resources to deliver objectives on time.
  • Supplier management: assist in obtaining/evaluating offers, monitor performance, negotiate contracts/SLAs, liaise with suppliers, ensure security and access controls.
  • Maintain stock control, monitor and report performance, and ensure compliance with security policies.
  • Monitor telephone facilities and IT helpdesk to ensure SLAs are met and data is used to drive action.
  • Problem management: report issues, ensure awareness of problems among IT staff, and prevent recurrence through proactive measures.
  • Respond to faults and user support across Trust sites and external customers within SLAs.
  • Maintain backups and participate in IT hardware/software audits; uphold ITIL processes.
  • Plan and implement project-oriented tasks and ensure problems reported on the Helpdesk are addressed.
Person Specification Qualifications
  • OEM-based technical qualification combined with 4 years in IT
  • Industry-based technical qualification
Experience
  • Knowledge of Avaya Communication Manager and related services (AES, Breeze, AMS, SM, SBC)
  • Knowledge of Avaya CMS
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Endpoint Manager (Intune) or leading MDM solutions
  • Specialist knowledge of telecommunications systems with evidence-based experience
  • Willing to undertake training, including external training
  • Experience of working within an IT environment
  • Experience with large telephony and mobile installations
Skills and Knowledge
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate complex technical information clearly
  • Strong verbal and written communication, including report writing and presentations
  • Ability to participate in Trust IT on-call rota
  • Full clean driving licence
