The Radiology Department provides a service to both Inpatients and Outpatients, including General Radiography, Theatre Imaging, Ultrasound, CathLab, PET CT, MRI, CT and DEXA services. The holder of this post will work as a member of the Radiology Department and multidisciplinary teams, providing a high quality Radiology service to patients in accordance with professional standards of practice. The post holder will lead, guide, and supervise radiographic and other staff to assist the CSR in the management of the General Xray and Fluoro Imaging service, including theatre imaging and, where applicable, CathLab imaging.
The senior diagnostic radiographer must demonstrate strong leadership and management skills, core professional competence, autonomous practice, and the ability to work in a rapidly changing environment. The successful candidate must possess a comprehensive knowledge of diagnostic radiography and an awareness of the roles, abilities, and limitations of all members of the multidisciplinary team.

Working week: 35 hours plus on call.
Responsibilities Clinical- Recognise the need for effective self management of workload and resources and adapt practice accordingly.
- Engage in leadership, creating and promoting healthy working relationships and providing strategic and clinical leadership that results in an effective, efficient, quality assured, patient centred service.
- Deputise for the CSR during absenteeism.
- Carry out general and highly complex radiographic procedures, maintaining high professional standards and adhering to legislation.
- Engage with consultants and develop specialised view protocols to meet needs for patient management and surgical decision making, and continuously update Department handbooks.
- Organise, plan and prioritise workload according to clinical need.
- Implement change in practice based on critical evaluation of evidence based practice and influence others accordingly.
- Advise on patient schedule and waiting lists, assisting the CSR to build booking grids to optimise department facilities.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of operational policies, protocols and guidelines, ensuring optimal utilisation of resources and systematic audit.
- Lead clinical audit in accordance with SI 256 of 2018 and SI .
- Demonstrate leadership skills in adapting techniques and equipment for imaging of compromised patients.
- Justify and optimise radiographic examinations.
- Schedule workflow in general and specialist areas.
- Handle technology troubleshooting, risk management, and equipment audit.
- Maintain accurate clinical data systems complying with hospital standards.
- Report operational issues to CSR and/or Radiography Services Manager.
- Manage consumable use efficiently.
- Assess patient suitability for IV injections, checking renal function and contraindications.
- Implement continuous learning programmes for staff, adhering to ALARA principles and statutory instruments (SI 256 & SI 30).
- Supervise and teach recent graduates, assistants, students and postgraduate students.
- Make clinical decisions that may alter patient pathways and raise abnormal findings.
- Deliver presentations on radiation protection, health & safety, and patient safety aligned with European and Irish legislation.
- Administer IV injections, where required, under departmental policy.
- Manage patients who experience contrast reactions or other incidents promptly and in line with policy.
- Uphold patient confidentiality and respect customs, values, and spiritual beliefs.
- Monitor and ensure adequate stock levels in the work area.
- Liaise with CSR and Radiographic Service Manager on staff rotation and training.
- Act as an active member of the diagnostic imaging and multidisciplinary team.
- Ensure all staff perform manual handling tasks in accordance with policy and training.
- Adhere to the principles of radiation protection: justification, optimisation (ALARA) and dose constraints/limits, and be familiar with S.I.256 and S.I.30.
- Show flexibility in work patterns, including extended hours when patient volumes increase.
- Participate in the departmental on call rota with own transport.
- Set up, maintain and review QA programmes.
- Participate in weekly huddles to address department achievements and issues, outline audits, and encourage staff engagement.
- Support team learning and communication via teams.
- Keep policy updates and compliant documents available on teams.
- Encourage reporting of incidents and learning opportunities via the incident system.
- Maintain accurate clinical data systems.
- Assist with equipment maintenance records, downtime, and performance; coordinate preventative maintenance.
- Support improvement initiatives with the CSR and Radiographic Service Manager.
- Coordinate staff rotations to ensure adequate coverage.
- Investigate and address complaints, accidents, and incidents per policy.
- Ensure staff understand and comply with safety legislation and policies.
- Maintain departmental operation in accordance with policy.
- Upload safety questionnaires to the Radiology IT System as per policy.
- Ensure compliance with infection control, health and safety, and other policies.
- Participate in the implementation and maintenance of the QA programme, reporting progress to the CSR.
- Update equipment inspection records for faults.
- Troubleshoot all imaging and electronic patient systems.
- Assist with quality assurance programme.
- Collaborate with the physicist on safety issues and operational matters.
- Promote a safe environment for staff and patients.
- Maintain knowledge of relevant HIQA standards, infection control and hygiene standards.
- Develop a checklist for staff in case of breakdowns and power outages.
- Monitor compliance with hospital hygiene policies.
- Support sustainable energy, water and waste initiatives.
- Understand diagnostic reference levels for routine examinations and compare with national local DRLs.
- Develop a personal development plan (PDP) and professional portfolio.
- Critically self evaluate performance.
- Conduct evidence based research and participate in studies.
- Apply learning outcomes in the clinical setting.
- Maintain and develop knowledge, skills and aptitudes to respond to clinical profile changes and legal requirements.

- Possess a Degree in Radiography or the Diploma of the College of Radiographers.
- Registered in the Radiographer's Division by the Radiographers Registration Board at CORU.
- Not less than 3 years full time post qualification clinical experience.
- Possess a recognised postgraduate course as recognised by IIRRT (desirable) or relevant specialised clinical experience.
