Job Description

About the role

The role will provide technical design input to proposing and detailing design solutions for upcoming highways pavement renewal schemes around the CPS (M25) network.

There is a broad range of engineering design challenges across the M25 and the need for safe and efficient design solutions are fundamental for keeping the UK's biggest, busiest and most critical road networks operational day in, day
out.

This role will provide the individual with projects where they can have complete design ownership over,leading and directing the design outcome of schemes, completing detailed design and then having the opportunity to follow through the practical construction onsite across the M25 network.

The designer will be expected to assist with method engineering reviews with framework contractors and ensure the design is based around safe and efficient construction processes.

The role will require efficient design coordination, reviewing documentation from Framework Consultants and assist in managing design workload in line with the delivery priorities and road space booking programme. The role will require a close working relationship with Asset and PM teams and other designers responsible for the relevant assets.

General: Focus on cost-effective design solutions to maintain or improve the M25 highways asset to the standards agreed and considering the needs of key stakeholders. Deliver the outcomes agreed with the National Highways and Connect Plus DBFO Co. to programme and budget, and to meet CPS quality standards. Coordinate with Design, Asset and PM teams and organisations (NH SES)

What you'll be doing

Main focus areas:

  • Develop and agree briefs with the design team and design suppliers, to cover scope, budget and
    programme, and to obtain agreement from Asset lead.
  • Prepare designs, reports, specifications and other deliverables to budget and programme.
  • Undertake optioneering and feasibility of design solutions and preparation of whole life costing.
  • Preparation and review of contract documentation.
  • Review of Traffic Management Plans, Diversion Routes and organise Temporary Traffic Regulation
    Orders with Highways England and Local Councils.
  • Deliver schemes in accordance with CPS Quality Management Processes and CPS internal standards.
  • Work with the Project Manager to lead the internal Gateway reviews during the design phase to
    ensure that they are timely and appropriate sign off is achieved at each Gateway.
  • To manage and monitor all resources (internal and external) for delivery to budget and programme.
  • To review and check deliverables from internal and external designers to ensure that designs are
    complete and compliant, and ensure they meet the brief and agreed outcomes, prior to submission
    to National Highways through the Review Process.
  • Report to the Desing lead, Principal Engineer and Project Manager on performance against budget
    and programme.

  • Technically accountable for the design solutions, engaging with method engineering reviews to drive
    innovative solutions that can be safely installed and are best for the asset need.
  • Support the delivery of the business' sustainability activities.
    Other areas of work:
  • Assist Engineers in carrying out site surveys on the network.
  • Seek innovation and continual improvement in the delivery of schemes and techniques used in
    design and construction.
  • To take part in detailed design workshops and provide an holistic viewpoint when Principal Designer
    scheme reviews are being undertaken.
  • Liaise with all statutory bodies/authorities as required - such as Highway Authorities, Planning Authorities and statutory undertakers.
  • Assist in identifying and presenting schemes that need to be included in the 5 Year Asset Management Renewals Programme.

    Who we're looking for

  • Broad skills, knowledge and understanding of highway related design areas, including design codes
    (DMRB/MCDHW/TSRGD etc.) relevant to highway engineering.
  • Knowledge of CDM and other H&S legislation.
  • Hold a relevant College/University vocational qualification. (MEng/MSC/BEng/BSc/HNC and HND).
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution (ICE or CIHT).
  • Registered with the Engineering Council at IEng or CEng level or with good relevant experience and
    expecting to obtain IEng/CEng within 12 months from appointment.
  • Broad understanding of environmental requirements of highway schemes.
  • Appropriate recent experience in highway engineering on Local Authority or the strategic high-speed
    network
  • Understanding of environmental requirements of highway schemes.
  • Broad knowledge of Quality Management & IMS.
  • Licensed to drive in the UK or with reciprocal agreement
