Job Description
We lead the UK's diplomatic, development and consular work around the world. We employ around 17,000 staff in our global network of 281 offices worldwide. Our UK-based staff work in King Charles Street in London, Abercrombie House in East Kilbride and in Milton Keynes.
Your role with us
When you join us as the Senior Overseas Fire Safety Officer you'll take responsibility for leading and conducting a fire safety operating model review, and implementing a new fire safety structure for our extensive overseas estate. Offering your knowledge, expertise and inspirational leadership to colleagues across the function as you develop a range of training and awareness campaigns to drive improvements in competence, you'll also work proactively in our overseas networks to improve operational fire safety. In addition, we'll expect you to develop assurance reporting processes for improved governance and oversight, and lead an overseas fire safety working group to help us deliver an innovative and supportive communications strategy.
Your additional responsibilities will be many and varied, and include advising on the fire safety aspects of large overseas projects, tracking risk and progressing mitigations to an acceptable level, and reporting and escalating areas of operational concern. Liaising with other departments and stakeholders to align your work with security constraints, and helping your overseas colleagues understand their duties, you'll also conduct inspections and audits to ensure compliance with Health & Safety obligations, and work with service delivery partners to ensure fire risk is managed correctly.
We estimate that you'll be travelling overseas in one week out of every eight, however the exact frequency and location will be agreed in advance.
Who we're looking for
To be a success in this significant senior role you should be a member of the Institute of Fire Engineers or its equivalent, and hold (or be working towards) recognised qualifications, for example, Level 3 or 4 Diploma in Fire Science and Fire Safety, or relevant building industry qualifications. We'll look for well-developed experience and knowledge of the latest fire safety management principles, and your excellent problem-solving skills will allow you to apply alternative fire safety solutions and fire risk assessments.
You'll be engaging with a diverse range of colleagues, managing competing workloads and priorities, and operating in a fast-paced environment, so it's important that you have good written and verbal communication skills. We'll also expect you to be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the requirements of the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order and Fire Safety England Regulations, or the Approved document B, Fire Strategies, BS9999, RRFSO, BS5839 etc and the UK Statutory compliance requirements in relation to an operational estate.
You must be a British citizen at the time of your application, and you'll be required to attain Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance. Please note that obtaining DV clearance can take approximately three months depending on your individual circumstances. For more information about this process, click here.
We encourage applications from all communities, so that we reflect the very best of 21st century Britain. Everyone here gets the support to develop their skills and capabilities as well as benefits that help to make the most of life in and out of work, including a Civil Service pension.
Use your talent and experience to shape our nation's future, and deliver tangible improvements to millions of lives, including your own.
