Thisprestigious and well-established fellowship post has been approved by the RoyalCollege of Surgeons and the SBNS.

TheDepartment of Neurosurgery in Leeds provides world-class adult NeurosurgicalOncology services. The service is consultant-led and delivered throughdedicated sub-speciality services. Thefellowship is designed for Neurosurgical clinicians towards the end of trainingand will provide all aspects of sub-speciality training in Neuro-oncologysurgery in preparation for a consultant role sub-specialising in this field

Main duties of the job

TheNeurosurgical Oncology post will include a thorough grounding in the clinicalmanagement, investigation and surgical techniques for optimally managing HighGrade and Low Grade brain tumours including metastases. There are furtheropportunities to develop research and to attend Gamma Knife sessions. Workingwith Neuro-oncologists, researchers and the clinical nurse specialist team isexpected. The fellow will gain independent competencies in dealing with HighGrade and Low Grade tumours including awake craniotomy, fluorescence, Gliadel,frame based and frameless image guidance and robot-assisted procedures. Leeds also now has an intraoperative MRIscanner.

Job responsibilities

Theprofessorial department of Neuro-oncology is based in the newly completedBexley wing at St Jamess University Hospital.There is a gamma knife machine and IMRT facilities which attractreferrals from across the North of England and Northern Ireland.

TheGeneral Infirmary at Leeds is a level 1 trauma unit and there are close linkswith surgical specialties including trauma, maxillofacial, plastics and ENTsurgery.

Thedepartment's work has continued to increase over the past years. The current caseload is some 3000 inpatientsper year and approximately 2000 operative cases per year.

Qualifications

• MBBS or equivalent medical qualification Outcome 1 at ST6
• CCT in Neurosurgery
• Passed Speciality Fellowship Examination in Neurosurgery or equivalent
